What was so great about the old forums?

Post by klinky » Thu Nov 28, 2002 10:50 am

Why is there all this nostalgia for the old forums?

Were they really that great? I think alot of people are remembering them founder then they actually were.

There was less quibbling there sure... Less spamming, less people...
Of course alot less activity as well.

The new forums came along and with the new look I think it attracted some new people. Now alot of these new people just announce that they're here and then leave. So mainly we're left with the core people who were on the old forums.

There was rampent spamming going on before the ORG was shutdown a month or so ago. That's been curbed however. There isn't really any major spam. Most posts have a actual question attached and some actual ontopic conversation.

About arguements and there being more "hate" on this board then the old board. I don't really see that. There was still alot of DBZ bashing, Evangelion bashing, Linkin Park bashing, AMV vs AMV threads, ErMaC sucks threads, Kevin Caldwell sucks threads... Anyone remeber Sammy? How about the annoying RamonesFan234334 or whatever... Yeah they were big parts of the old board. They were annoying.

I enjoy the new board way better then the old one. Enjoy having a avatar, post count, some icons at the bottom for AIM, MSN, WWW. I like the looks of phpBB. I love the video help forums. I am spending more time in off-topic and general AMV catagories... Overall I enjoy it alot more mainly do to the fact that there is ALOT more to do here, there are many different users on at various times during the day(well usually not around 4am pacific :\). There is usually always a topic I feel compelled to reply to.

Now this brings up another point. The old forums were quieter and there wasn't as much activity. However, we have most of the same people from the old forum still here actively posting on the boards. If you want it to be less active and more like the old forums then limit yourself :\ spend less time here, obviously that was done before hand. I don't care.

And about people hating each other, or dissing each other. There are alot of people with alot of opinions and many people are going to have opinions that object with what your opinions are.

You could also relate the forum to life, as I did in another thread. There are many assholes in life, you're stuck with them in there. It's the same way with a forum. No matter what forum you goto you're probably going to get atleast one asshole that you don't agree with... :\ So tuff cookies I guess.

Oh and by being a hata' of the newer forums, you be adding to the hate problem yo self. It's not going back to the old forums, they're not coming back. So ^_^, I would suggest you guys move on or move out.

Simple, I've been here over a year. The retards have flocked in since about feb of 2002. Thats how it magically excludes me. Plus you can also think about the whole, I'm not a dumbass part.

i hate this seniority crap. don't bull shit me man, you're worse than over half the people here are. fuck, we all are. but, simply put, none of us actually tighten our asses because we're afraid of people sticking gigantic dildos of bigotry up there. that's just indecent and shouldn't even be thought of. you're bitching about something that hasn't even begun to show it's real phalic-sharpness.

frankly, yes, it has gotten worse. but what's whining got to do with the solution? do something about it. stop being a jackass, or just leave. perhaps you could join in the cherade and parry along like nobody's business, but you're just sitting in the corner waiting for the starting bell to chime so that big meaty administrators can laugh as they rip you to pieces. RING THE DAMN BELL YOURSELF.

"The foolish man declares his superiority. The wise man keeps it quiet."

Basically, declaring that your seniority and whatnot makes you a magic "non-retard" person actually makes you one. You come across as arrogant, and cause more trouble than progress, though you may wish for progress. If you'd let your "non-retardedness" show in your posts, that'd be better in the long run.

And just because you were here before February of this year, doesn't make you a "magic good poster person".
I'm out...

Eh. I like the new forums better only because the old ones were, as Klinky said, les actively visited. There is more lively participation here than in the old forums, and I like it.

I suppose time can make something seem better than it really was. Which isn't to say the old forums were bad per se, it's just that nostalgia is the bottom of a glass soda bottle. When you look at something through it, it seems distorted. Notalgia makes something seem like it was better or more perfect than it really was. People romanticize reality through nostalgia. They make it seem nicer. add in the negativity problems these new forums were having until recently, and of course people will romanticize the old forums.

I personally agree with most of what Klinky said. I love the look of the new forums, having an avatar and a sig, and how active people are in the forum now, not to mention how threads are divided into pages and you don't have to scroll through an entire long sheet of posts, or how much simpler it is to insert links and images (good for those that don't know HTML). No "How do I insert images" threads being made every other day.
