legalizing weed: What are your thoughts?

The title says it all. I'm pro legalizing BTW.

I say legalize it. Then grade it, tax it, and sell it like cigarettes over the counter. If people get in an accident while high, treat it the same as alcohol.

Also allow free growing of zero to very low potency hemp (good for clothing, paper, rope, food products, etcetera), and a cheap, annual license (perhaps) to individually grow a small amount of potent stuff. Growing over the license limit will result in either a fine equal to the excess, or confiscation, but no jail or criminal time.

Small farm co-ops and large, licensed farms can grow and sell as much of it as they want for free, as long as it is sold in the farm's name.

Just some thoughts.

Legalize all drugs. Use money from sales towards TRUTHFUL education about their effects, and lock away anyone who is caught driving stoned or being reckless with them. I think that pretty much solves it. Some people are gonna be stupid and ruin their lives, but their lives are their responsibililty, the Governments job shouldnt be to protect people from their own mistakes and failures. Alchohol is just has dangerous if not more dangerous than a lot of illegal drugs yet smart and responsable people(and even people that arent that smart) manage to not kill themselves or ruin their lives using it. Use of other drugs would be no different.

But it is the job of the goverment to protect the other people from those reckless drivers.

As for legalizing weed. I sit in the area of no to don't care.

Why is it the government's job to keep drunk drivers from behind the wheel? And how would the government go about this? Station a police officer in every bar to Breathalyze everyone who is leaving and confiscate their keys or jail them?

I am pro marijuana legalization for two reasons:
1) I like to smoke it, and would like the ease of getting good shit that it would then allow.
2) I feel that it is a less dangerous drug than booze on all fronts.

I say legalize it. However, there still needs to be some restrictions on it. I don't think people should be able to grow it at home, but it should be available for purchase, especially for medical reasons. It should be regulated similarly to alcohol, meaning anyone can get it

When you think about it, it's much less harmful than a lot of legal substances... assuming you are over 21. Definitely less harmful to others. Take driving for example. When people are drunk, they want to drive to get more beer or do something spontaneous and most likely harmful to someone/something. That's not true of all people, but most of the people I know. Now when they're high, it's totally different. They just sit, laugh, eat junk food, and are far too lazy to go anywere. So fatalities on the road are far less, even though tests have proven that in most instances a person under the influence of marijuana has slower reactions than one under the influence of alcohol.

I've got a lot more reasons though.

But I won't bore you all with them right now. Maybe later, if this thread develops.

Everyone has given opinions on why marijuana should be legalized. Well, it's not. And I'd like to know the reasons WHY it is not legalized. The government must think that it is more harmful than alcohol or cigarettes in SOME way.

Anyone know what the short term and long term effects of marijuana are? That might lead to a discussion based more on facts than speculation. I hope.
