2003: The Year of the Matrix? (slight SPOILERS)

Post by KungPaoChicken » Sat Jan 04, 2003 3:10 am

Just read the new Newsweek feature on The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. Seems like 2003 will be the year of The Matrix. Let us count the ways.

For starters, if you didn't know, The Matrix, when released in 1999 (i believe), revolutionized pop culture. All of a sudden, it was cool (if not cooler) to wear black leather, trenchcoats, and sunglasses. All of a sudden, movies began having cheesy bullet-time spoofs and having the actors do their own stunts.

So anyway, with the next two movies due out in May and November of 2003, respectively, Animatrix in Feb 2003, Enter the Matrix, the video game, in May 2003, and super promises that each of those brings, it does indeed seem like the year of the Matrix.

Let's move on. Speaking of cheesy bullet-time spoofs, at first the Wachowski Bros. were pretty flattered when a lot of movies, even the NFL, copied the idea, they soon began to hate it. So they set out to create some special FX that either because of technology, time, money, or some other factor, could never be reproduced. So we have Neo vs. 100 Agent Smiths, one of them real (in the context of when they were filming it) and 99 others digitally produced. The catch? Supposedly you can't tell, on celluloid, which one is real. And we also have the stretch of highway built in NorCal, $300,000 per quarter mile. And then a shot which translates to 17 mins in the movie that alone cost 2/3 of the budget of the first Matrix movie. Oh, then there's that 2 day shoot in downtown Sydney where they closed the entire place down just for the shoot.

And that's just the movies. Nine anime productions, all original stories either written or approved by the Wachowski Bros. are set to be released in Feb. All impacted in some way or another by prominent anime producers in Japan. One is in complete photorealistic CGI. Four of them will be free for download off the net. All nine will be collected and released on a DVD for purchase.

The video game also carries an original script penned by the Bros. That is set to release for all platforms when The Matrix Reloaded releases in theaters.

And this is all within one year; all fully backed by the Wachowski Bros. That is a lot of Matrix mythos... indeed, the year of the Matrix.

Indeed, I've been waiting for this since I first heard of upcoming sequels. I had heard they wanted to do new things with the upcoming movies that were origional much like how the camera movement was in the first one. I was unaware about any information about what was different, though. Thanks for the information, KungPaoChicken, you've made my day. :D
