Smart and ditzy anime girls

For a cliche character you can pick any girl form Kanon (I don't care if its the old version, it's the same), or the ones at Sayonara Setzubou Sensei.
As for a strong character I was thinking in Misuzu from Air or Lina Invers from Slayers.

see another contradiction @_@ Misuzu from AIR as strong but a character like Mai from Kanon as cliche? :/ ah well i guess its up to individual interpretation of the characters

^Definitely agree with that one. Another chick to add to the strong list would be Lafiel from Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars, Banner of the Stars II, etc. Although her independent and intelligent qualities may be better perceived through dialogue, I'm sure there's plenty of footage that you'd be able to work with.

Well that's probably not a good one but should work: Narusegawa Naru from Love Hina.

I would use her as a strong type but if you search you can also find scenes on which she can be used as cliche. She is showing her strong side on every single episode so it won't be a problem but as for the cliche side you'll need to search a little. The good side of using her is that she will be wearing whatever you want depending on the episode... from naked to nerd-like clothes.

I'm sorry I can't tell you exactly which episodes to use because I totally forgot the details since I watched it a few years ago, but getting a random episode will almost surely work.

episodes: The second episode is probably best. But she's a ditz thoughout most of the anime which is 26 episodes. Cool mecha anime just has some issues that cause some controversy.
