There are just a few things that I can't stand. I guess I'll just reiterate what I agree with...

1. Music Selection -- Music is the core of every AMV. If I can't enjoy the song, I won't enjoy the AMV. I admit I've seen amazing AMVs with songs I don't like at all (Cute Girls from Otakon2007 for example)... and while I consider the AMV "excellent"... that doesn't mean I enjoyed the AMV. This is more of a taste thing... you'll never be able to please everyone with your music selection.

2. Poor matchup -- I like innovation as much as the next guy... but please, don't put comedy to gangster rap. It just doesn't work. Note: this applies purely to music/audio. You can put dark/serious scenes in a comedy AMV (lol, Askua the Black Knight), but serious music in a comedy AMV is almost certainly doomed to failure.

3. Bad Cuts / Transitions -- Unfortunately, like lighting in a movie or play, or some background instruments in music... the better you get at making transitions, the less noticable they are. IE: the best cuts are almost completely unnoticable, despite being a rather harsh transition. On the other hand, a bad cut sticks out like a sore thumb. If too many cuts in an AMV are confusing, or if they change backgrounds too much and are off timing, I find it hard to watch. One example that happens too often is the good ol' Lip Sync with cuts in the middle of phrases... a character who manages to say one phrase over the course of 3 backgrounds... and the editor somehow still managed to not Lip Sync the guy up correctly. >_>

And there is also a little note on this one: sometimes it is artistic to place cuts over different backgrounds or over different actions like in real music videos during dialogue, but I'm talking about the times when it sucks and it is clear that the editor was simply too lazy to find a better scene.

4. Distracting Effects -- White Flashes have been used effectively... but usually they are too distracting. Even when perfectly on beat they break up the flow of the song. Poor use of effects are a major turn-off for me.

5. Bad Mood Sync -- Acting Scenes to luvvy-duvvy lyrics, etc. etc. For me, Bad Mood Sync is usually the difference between "Really Bad" and "bad" AMVs >_>
First, I really find it grating when an AMV is so overly processed and has so many effects added that it's too perfect-looking. If I am watching an AMV, but I can't tell that there was a human being behind the scenes making everything, it really loses some of the enjoyment factor. It feels like there's no heart to it when everything is so gorgeous and shiny. I personally find the teeny little nitpick flaws really endearing, as it shows someone put time and effort into making it, instead of the vid looking like it was stamped out by some kinda robot.
I would agree with you if it weren't for Euphoria. Euphoria is one of the most shiny AMVs that I've seen and yet it somehow retains a soul. I think that some people sometimes get caught up in the technicals that they forget that AMVs also have a artistic factor to them. A great AMV manages to be impressive on all fronts, technical, symbolic, artistic, etc. etc.

I just wanna see what happens on the screen... wierdly enough, not many AMVs qualify in this aspect.

Well, either that or I'm just getting old! :O

My major turn-off to an AMV is when i lose sight of the Anime that is supposed to be being played. The Bleach Technique Beat video? Hideous in my oppinion. I'm sure it took them alot of time, but i couldn't tell what the hell was supposed to be going on in that video.

I also stand by what a few people said earlier about music choice and anime choice. If the song is by linkin park, forget it. If the anime is singularly Naruto, forget it.

Other than that i like most AMV's.
Pocky? Why it's better than Sex.
More Addictive than crack!

Yet Safer than Both!
