Video Footage Gankage - How should one react?
I've seen a lot of people take a video I made and rebrand it as their own. That's pretty common stuff and I go after people who do that. I don't like others taking credit for my vid.
But have any of you found videos out there where you just KNOW someone stole your edits to make thier AMV with a different song?
I came across a video on youtube called "Card Captor Sakura-Silent Running" and I realized that about 50% of the footage is literally sourced from my "Silent Lucidity" video. I mean, it couldn't be any more obvious. I don't know how to feel about that. Being the closet troll that I am, I posted a comment that my edits were ganked and posted my video as a reply.
I'm not angry, more bewildered. But should I be mad? I'm confused. Someone help!

You should be outraged. They are trampling all over your rights as an artist. File a DMCA takedown request. And sue youtube.
No, seriously, to offer my own opinion -- I don't care if someone takes "my" edits; it's not worth my time to care about such trivialities. (To preemptively deflect an anticipated criticism: I have spent hundreds of hours on single videos, so don't bust out the "you must not put much effort into your videos" card.)
I do not think such an act is fundamentally different from me using video off a DVD or whatnot and transforming it to fit my needs, and I think it is hypocritical for me to whine about such things so long as I'm doing similar things / have done similar things myself.
I guess it's just a mindset thing. Do you like to share, or you are a selfish cunt?

That's kinda where I'm coming from on this one too. I kinda want to be angry but can't be cause I'd feel like a complete hypocrit. =Ptrythil wrote:I do not think such an act is fundamentally different from me using video off a DVD or whatnot and transforming it to fit my needs
Still... if someone's going to borrow source from an existing AMV, I'd like to see them make an effort instead of taking 5 or 6 different 30 second long unedited clips from that AMV and stringing it to new music. My bugaboo on it is seeing my selected clips in the exact same order with the same effects and same transitions, laid down to some crappy music.
Ok... there I go being a hypocrit again.

This. If anything you should be glad that your video got enough recognition for someone to think it was worth stealing.trythil wrote:I do not think such an act is fundamentally different from me using video off a DVD or whatnot and transforming it to fit my needs, and I think it is hypocritical for me to whine about such things so long as I'm doing similar things / have done similar things myself.
If it were original content of course, then that would be a different matter. But considering how many weeks the animators themselves put into making the anime that you then used for your source, I'd say that you are in the same position they are. AMVs don't really "belong" to anyone as such, they're all just fan-made creations and should be treated as such, the more they get shared around for people's enjoyment the better. Essentially all you done was remix the anime that the producers created from their hard work and effort, and now you're complaining that someone else dares to remix your works. Shame on them!
Unless of course you're really so one-sighted that you hate the thought of other people watching, or dare I say it, stealing your hard work and effort.
The most you can really do is just ignore it. This is a common occurrence and I don't see why you should feel the need to be mad at the fact that some other lowlife can't even edit to save his life and thus has to resort to using your video's cuts. Next time this happens to you, instead of being blinded by the rage that someone has stolen your video (which for all intents and purposes you put on this site to share with everyone), think of the people who made the anime, and how much it pains them to see their hard work and effort thrown into a badly mixed compilation by some person who didn't even take the time to thank them for all their creations.
