Punk AMV

Post by Crack-Link_slap » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:42 pm

Me and a few friends wanted to colab for an AMV and I suggested a punk song. The friend of mine that is most experienced as an editor promptly called me an idiot because punk music is a bitch to edit too. I wanted to know if this is really true? Also, why are there so few AMVs with hardcore (2nd wave) punk music in them?

Lol, there you answered your own question.
But really it's sad but true. When I started making AMVs I had to start really looking into my lesser listened to genres. I love to listen to punk and ska (I actually did see a pretty cool AMV to a Streetlight Manifesto song once), but for editing they're really lacking in a way to connect your visuals to your music. Like good beat (steady and not too fast), vocals that you can understand. The stress in a lot of punk songs is disproportionately on vocals actually and the opposite actually sounds a lot better in amvs.
The first amv I ever made was to a Bad Religion song but it was like a slower song from a newer (2004 I think) CD. I used a Goldfinger song once but that's getting into pop punk and in that case what's the point right.
But yea, you're friend seems to know what he/she's talking about.

it depends on what you are used to editing... i know some people who think slow drama/romance is hard to edit to but then they are used to using faster songs and seizure editing.. and likewise for the reverse...

That's what I figured, but it can make some nice lyric sync if done right.... right?

Sure. I mean nothing's impossible of course. I think it would take extra planning to make it come out well. I would try to think of an original way to connect it to the song. I don't think punk music is very good for storyline type amvs, lyric sync wouldn't be my emphasis. I would go more towards an overall theme and maybe an anime mix to accommodate it. Of course it's relative to the particular song but just in general that's what I'd do, look at the idea behind it and not just the words.

Speaking of the anime mix, that was what I was thinking. The idea I had was the song Crush 'Em by GHB (I will link it at the bottom), with Eureka Seven, Soul Eater, and FLCL. I picked them because they have a good amount of energy in each to fit the song. Storyline was not really what I had planed because punk music usually doesn't have a coherent "story" to it, its more like (if there is any sort of form of a story at all), "this is some stuff that happened that all together roughly equals the philosophical anti-establishment point I am trying to get across".
Here is the link to the song: http://www.last.fm/music/GBH/_/Crush+%27em

No music is impossible to synch to you may just have to adjust the way you synch.

P.S. Alot of punk has very specific stories.

P.P.S. why do i already know that song ... was it on a compilation or something?

P.P.P.S there are quite a few videos i can think of off the top of my head. Two I made ... well not hardcore punk but in the subgenre at
least.
