Golden age of AMVs?

Well there is the golden age of comic books, Hollywood, cartoons etc. What would we consider the golden age of AMVs?

Most older editors get nostalgic about early 2000s, but I think around 2004-2006 AMVs really gained more in popularity and would really justify calling it more of a golden age (when you look at the meaning of golden age itself). By that time period anime was more exposed and there was more of a variety available so people were looking for more than just DBZ/Cowboy Bebop video of the week. You see things like AMV Hell that came out and created essentially a brand new genre of videos during this time period as well. There is also the start of youtube around this time which helped to bring more widespread popularity. While a lot of people may not agree with the existence of youtube, it's not something can be ignored as to its influence on the growth of online videos (including AMVs).

That's said, it's hard to judge something that's still rather "young" in popularity since we are still "actively involved" in it's history. I haven't really noticed a decrease in popularity and if you look at the top videos of all time on this site, most of them are 2004-2010, so it's very possible we still could be IN the golden age of AMVs currently.

Low quality footage, bad codecs and compression (lolrealplayer), 56k modems, lack of variety in footage used...this is your "golden era?". I watched the Kevin Caldwell and GGG days but the current era of videos is far superior...especially when i think of the current range of Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese videos.

In short, 2004-ongoing.

There was no such thing. I hate a good number of things about the past of this hobby. Con drama was as bad as it always was. Stupid rivalries , fighting over the stupidest things. People look back on the good things i was a part of some of them, there were also bad things LIKE 2 VCRs. Try to make a 2VCR vid. Just try it. Then tell us about how much you miss the good old days.

So many artfags out there today making crap thats "good", but boring as hell. Those were the days when videos were just awesome, and thats all that mattered. And I think most of your comments there are like 5 years out of sync...

While that might be true about that being all that mattered at the time, you are definitely allowing nostalgia to cloud your judgment here. A golden era isn't always a "beginning" of something, but a "growing and flourishing" of something and more of a "prime" period of said form of entertainment. While around 2000 the digital age of AMVs may have begun, it's mostly the transition for the old era of AMVs to the new era. Just gonna be a little honest and say a lot of the stuff that was considered good then (and still considered good by some older editors), if it were released today it would be torn apart due to their weakness in presentation (ironically, it would probably be by the same people that would praise it if it were "vintage"). I will agree that there is plenty of "artistic crap" out there that looks nice, but is basically just a polished turd. That said, there are STILL good videos being made today that AREN'T just flashy art videos. Perhaps in 2050 we'll say that 2000-2015 or something was the golden era, but I don't think it will ever be just those early 2000 years that will be considered the golden age. I'll be honest and credit youtube for the boost in popularity of fan made MV for ANY type of entertainment, due to the ease of distribution and the interest people have since the founding of youtube to look up "random videos" that relate to their interests. While it may lead to a decline in it later due to legal issues or something, it still doesn't change the fact that it did create a huge boom in this type of hobby.
