How many of you use/can use After Effects in your AMVs?

So after having some experimentation and utilization of the tutorials, I must say, the power of this program is staggering. Frankly, it allows me to transition scenes in ways that are simply not possible in Premiere, and often, it's easier to do too. I see no feasible way, for me at least, to add stuff at the end after arranging scenes in Premiere, like some people say they do. The way I'm approaching it is making mini compositions and then sequencing them in Premiere afterwards, because I tend to work on different segments of a video at a time. The only problem with this method is that when you try to sync something to music, you have to RAM preview it every damn time. So yeah, synching scenes to very specific beats in Premiere is easier, but the actual transitions are done better in AE. Point is, I find myself going back and forth, but I really like the program. I believe I can make better AMVs with this and Premiere than with just Premiere alone.

Anyways, that's my very limited experience with it so far.

I even have a few books about After Effects. I have even read them all!
But it's a problem for me to use illegal programs so I need to wait until my 18th birthday to get it as a gift or in any other suitable situation

I suck at AE. I do use it sometimes for AMVs and typography experimenting.
They never came nice, needless to say.

AE is one of those programs that takes a lot of shot planning. Sure there are things you can just do to a clip with filters and the like, but most of the time it's more like "okay, this shot is 6 seconds long, at 4:22 I need to begin the transition to end it by 6:00, so I need to mask x frames..." I don't generally get as anal as that, but this is where things like storyboarding really help when you're working in AE. Also I tend to cut almost an entire video first in premiere so I know where everything goes once it's time to do transitions/effects/composites.

In a lot of ways, you're literally animating instead of just "editing," so that's a whole nother skill set.
