The One

Post by CrackTheSky » Tue Sep 30, 2014 1:07 pm

On the way to NDK a few weeks ago, Koop and I had a long conversation on the plane about AMVs. One of the questions he asked me that made me stop and think was this (I'm paraphrasing):

"If you had to show a single AMV to someone who knew nothing about them, which one would you show to best describe what an AMV is?"

I'm curious to know what others think. Try not to just post your favorite AMV, because that's boring and we have enough of those threads in this forum's history. What AMV is the essential descriptor of the medium as a whole, or at least one of them? More importantly, why do you think so?

I'd definitely want to stick to something simple. No very unconventional editing or techniques that might confuse a total newcomer. No "offensive" content, of course (and by that I certainly mean no hentai or anything but definitely no super-violent or even fanservice-y clips). Even when it comes to music, unless someone is a huge fan of rap, country, metal or any other genre that tends to provoke instant disgust in so many people (people are fickle beasts and won't even give something a chance if it's a genre they hate), would definitely shoot for something pleasant and middle of the road but not boring, and that's totally subjective but you only get one shot at this with someone and you don't want to mess it up.

All that is a roundabout way of justifying this choice.

I feel inclined to post something related to the matrix...
... still I don't think even we had an answer for this.

Hmm I get your question but I'd tackle it from a different angle. Trying to find a representative amv sounds kinda stupid
After all it depends on the person you're going to show it too. Depending on who that person is I might show an Action AMV, Romance, Fun or something Artsy.

BUT, when I tell them that editing AMVs is a hobby of mine of course they'd want to see something I did. So show the person something you've made and think she'd enjoy most.
To answer your question - I would most likely show Tanz if I'd have to show them what an AMV is.

If it weren't personal and I'd be forced to choose this representative I go with Hold me now.
Spoiler :

Its got the Haruhi Dance, solid (but simple) editing, and a concept that connects strongly to the source material and caters to fans of the series very well.

It seems like a solid, good representative of your typical AMV.
