I'm guessing because you'd have to re-trace each and every frame. With the pen tool you can just move the anchor points around between frames (which is only slightly less tedious that re-tracing). Also, the polygonal lasso tool doesn't allow you to do Bezier curves so the accuracy of the mask is limited.

Bingo. Also, Adobe Photoshop 5.5 maxed out the CPU until I finished the lasso, which led to my poor Thunderbird-core Athlon XP overheating and BSODing a few times until I realized what was going on and took the side panel off the tower when editing.

I think affter effects is the best tool for making masks, but first you have to create all the points (it's a boring job ) xD

I disagree, the moving of the points I find to be just as much of a pain in the ass to do. (I mask on vegas pro 12, and hardly do it because I loathe masking. Moving the points tends to be more aggravating, especially when the shots frames change drastically.

I'm still trying to figure out masking and I don't get how moving the points is supposed to be easy. Maybe I'm laying down way too many to begin with?

When masking I redraw the whole mask each frame. It's faster than moving points around.
Ofcourse I first split the layer at each time my subject moves. Ctrl + shift + d ftw

I became an expert with the polygonal lasso and I've always preferred it more than the pen tool. I've never had any problems with accuracy.

Are you talking about making cross-over amvs? Well I would use AE for that since it's easier imo. I don't really use photoshop (mainly illustrator) unless I am going to add some special effects and create them
