Micro-Vid Reels Entries - should they be allow in contest
I am in a discussion with a head of an AMV contest. We are discussing whether Micro-Vid Reels (AMV-Hell styled entries) should be allowed in contest. I personally feel that they are distracting and tend to blend together, thus should not be allowed. I mean you may have a good group of clips, but how can you judge the AMV as a whole if some clips work and some do not. Plus as you run the contest, you could technical run two of them back to back and it is hard to tell where one end and one brings. I see where AnimeEXpo is no longer excepting them. Do you feel more contest should follow and do the same. I would love to hear others thoughts.

while it's not relevant to me, i think they should be. i haven't heard a good reason to reject them. as for the judging comment, what if you find a first half of a single source amv to be great but the second half to be poor? that isn't an uncommon thing or exclusive to "micro-vid reels" - it just comes down to assessing the overall execution. i don't like to see restrictions on what an author can or can't present to an audience to begin with (of course aside from time limits, adult content, etc.) it's just a style of presentation that is different from the norm, not even worthy of its own term imo. also, a big purpose for amv showings at anime conventions is the enjoyment of the audience, and this is a type of video a typical audience enjoys; have you considered allowing them to show while not being included in the competition?
with that same thought, what about MEPs? i could see those as potentially being similar to "amv hell" conceptually in that there could easily be a disconnect and different approach from section to section of a video between editors, not saying that is tasteful.
just my 2 cents

Re: Micro-Vid Reels Entries - should they be allow in contes
I think the main complaint people are having is that they have a massive advantage in winning over audience votes due to the quick nature of how they play out (also due to people having much worse ADD thanks to YouTube).
Each con is free to enforce whatever rules they see fit regarding "micro-vid reels" (we used to call them "blipverts" back in the day).
As a contest coordinator, your job is the get butts in seats and also giving them a good show by handling your editor's entries with care. It's a tough balance and you need to think of the best solution to please both parties.
