How many times to view anime episodes?

Post by HolyPhoenician » Thu Oct 01, 2015 6:04 pm

During the 'Scene Selection' phase, how many times do you view each episode until you feel like you have memorized all of the important scenes, character expressions, body position, background, etc?

I've read in one specific book that mentions that one needs to read a book 10 to 15 times in order to fully understand all of its contents. And if I recall correctly, the author said that the same method applies to videos.

I only need to view them once. I can scan through episodes in the "trimmer" in Sony Vegas to find what I need. Maybe twice, if I feel like taking notes (like actual notes on a paper that says what ep and where to find it) if it's a long series. Most of the time in my videos, I just make it up as I go along.

2 should be more than enough, the first time just watch it normaly, get a feel for potential scenes you might want to include in your video, the 2nd time around watch it with a notepad file open aswell, and everytime a scene, moment, line or even gesture that you think it could add to your amv, pause, and take notes in the notepad, like for example:

Ep1
16:43 - Girl with purple hair tilts her head (again)

But this is just my method/workflow, there isnt a go-to guide on scene selection, try different ways untill you find the one that suits your needs best!

if the serie is like 12 episodes and you loved it so much it might not be necessary. However in case of larger series (Naruto) you might need a blocknotes

I rarely make AMVs from series I haven't seen many, many, many times. So I usually know exactly where the scene is exactly in what episode before I start editing.

The bigger issue, and this has been discussed before, is one has become so involved in a particular series, sometimes one who has the propensity to imagine scenes that don't actually exist in the source material. This is usually because of access to multiple media, such as the anime's manga or radio plays, or due to "head canon," either beliefs which have come about through deductive reasoning (C is only possible if B happened after A, even though only A and C are shown) or because of canonical statements by creators which are not actually present in the source material.

Hi, im new and was wondering this too. So I was thinking, why not make a database of all the best scenes from every anime series? The scenes could be categorized according to theme, action, emotion, character, violence, horror etc and can be arranged chronologically or something like that. The database can also include the relevant links to the actual footage (google drive, youtube etc). So that way, anyone can quickly start working on an AMV without even having seen the relevant anime.
