Are AMV contests global?
Hi!
I've been reading this forum for a long time and now I decided to join. I've always wanted to take part in one of those AMV contests but it seems many of them are held in America or USA. In many rules they say that attendance is not required although encouraged. So I was wondering, does that mean that you can still take part in the competition even if you are from a different country? In my country there aren't lots of these AMV competitions, so I was wondering, is it okay to take part in a competition which is held in a different country (and which I can't obviously attend)? Has anyone taken part in an AMV contest that was held in a different country (and maybe even got to the finals or something)? Is this considered okay or not?
Thanks for answering! Also I'm sorry if this question is on a wrong board or has been asked before.

I believe that most of them allow editors from other countires to join, as all the ones I've entered there isn't a requirment for the editor to attend the convention. It will usually say it in the rules somewhere, if not they usually have a contact email that you could send an email asking if they accept internation entries.

The majority will accept international entries unless they state otherwise. To be honest, it's very rare to see attendance/living in the same country as a requirement. I think there are only a handful of small European conventions that do that be even then they still have other categories for international entries.
Just read the rules real quick (advice for any convention/contest you're entering

We in Canada are restricted on certain content and it took a while to get
used to how things were done on this board back in the early days. As far
as Conventions go, you'd really be surprised how many places actually have
these get-togethers ( i.e. I was "floored" to find-out that Minnesota had
the largest Anime Convention Area reserved specifically for them in the
Mall Of America years ago! What was weird was seeing the crowds while
stationed in Germany!!?! ) Feel Free to experiment with Concepts. Enjoy.

Re: Are AMV contests global?
I've seen plenty of international entrants to contests I frequent and even to ones I've ran. It's pretty common. It's also very common for these entrants to not be at the convention at all. In the end it really depends on the rules but most I've seen are open to it. The most restrictions I usually see in these circumstances is if free award delivery is given it's usually not extended out of the country.

I've won multiple awards while in Japan, including in the conventions ngsilver has run (he still has two of my medals, somewhere, in fact).
Vlad even shipped a trophy to me. :3

I can second everything everyone has said. The only thing that will probably happen if you win something, sometimes you have to pay part of the shipping if it is overseas.

Running AMV League, I've had to ship trophies and certificates all around the world - Brazil, Hungary, Italy, Canada, probably more I can't think of right now.
