Introducing AMV Tracker v1.0.0

AMV Tracker v1.0.0

Hello! I wanted to share with you a program I've been writing for the better part of the last six months or so, as I think at least some of you will find it useful. To keep myself from getting too wordy (as I tend to do), I'll skip all the boring stuff about what motivated it and direct you to my blog if you care. Suffice to say, it started as something related to my AMV Genome Project, but it became something that any AMV fan can use, regardless of whether or not you care about that.

What this is is basically a tool you can use to track, rate, and categorize the AMVs you watch. It's pretty straightforward, I think, but I've provided detailed instructions here if you need them. For the time being, it is something that is stored locally, on your own machine, rather than on a server somewhere else. Depending on how the Genome Project develops, that may change in the future, but that's still a long ways off, if it happens at all.

It's written in Python, which (as I learned after the fact) is not the greatest language ever for developing distributable executable files to the masses. Sparing you the technical reasons for this (which I don't fully grasp myself), what this means is that the download is quite a bit larger than something written in, say, C++ would be. Sorry for that, but it's the only programming language I know! And given that we're only talking tens of MBs here, hopefully it won't discourage you from taking a look.

Anyway, please check it out! All the details, along with a link to the download, can be found here:

https://amvtracker.wordpress.com/

If you do decide to look at this, PLLEEEeeeaAAaaSSSeee leave feedback! I don't care if it's good or bad or neutral or whatever, I've spent quite a lot of time working on this so I'm eager to hear what you think! This is still in development, so if you have any suggestions for things you'd like to see in future releases, bug reports, LITERALLY ANYTHING, please post here and let me know!

I hope you all like this, and thanks for taking the time to give it a go if you decide to!

Not bad idea, not sure about it's format , feels a tad overkill (too much details) but not bad. Kinda database pick at beginning bugged with that clear one on me, but i guess it went past it with genome one then I just made a clear one myself there.
Might want to think about even simpler "mode" maybe for some casual ppl, mby without forcing to fill out some fields (like idk editor name rly, just pseudonym). Not sure why i would want this over org opinion system that we are lazy about (mby for opinons better left for myself? )
Still better than that MMO.

Unfortunately, no. I don't have access to a Mac that I can use to compile the code into a distributable file, and it's unlikely that I'll be able to do that anytime soon...sorry! I wish it was as easy as clicking a "Compile for Mac" button, but sadly it's not that simple.

Hey, thanks for taking a look! At the beginning, when you are first asked to choose a database, if you want a blank one you should choose "My_AMV_Database.xls", not "blank_template.xls" (which is what I'm guessing you did).

That's what "Free Entry" is for; in that entry window you only have to fill out the editor name and video title, nothing else. I realize that it may be confusing when I made the entry field read "Editor name", as it's not asking for the editor's actual name there -- it's asking for their username. The "Pseudonym(s)" field is for inputting any other usernames that editor might go by, or might have gone by in the past. So, for example, if you were to enter one of your videos, you would put "Mol" in the Editor name field, and "Milk or Life!" in the Pseudonym field.

I've actually already released an updated version which addresses some of the concerns you raised; check out the release notes here, and download it here. Bunch of cool stuff added, including an option to specify where the video file is located on your computer so you can play the video directly from AMV Tracker, buttons you can click to automatically search for a given video or editor on the .org and YouTube, a function to copy a video from one database to another, and the ability to check and see if existing video files on your computer correspond to entries already in the database (and if they do, you can easily update the entry with the video file's location). For a more detailed explanation of these features, read the release notes, or this post on AMV Central.

PLEASE NOTE: if you download the latest version, and you have already started to add videos to a database with v1.0.0, please note that you will need to make a backup of the working database and move it into the new AMV Tracker folder. You will also need to go to "Database Management" > "Make spreadsheet compatible" and choose your old v1.0.0 database in order to use it with the new version.

No worries. I'm familiar with compiling on Mac. I expected this answer.
