20 Years of A-M-V.Org

Post by Kionon » Tue Mar 02, 2021 10:19 pm

Twenty years ago today, give or take some hours, I made an account on the Org, almost to the minute if you trust what my join TIME says here on the forums.

I had previously seen AMVs at anime conventions in the late nineties, notably A-Kon, AnimeFest, and Anime Weekend Atlanta, but I didn't get into working on AMVs myself until convinced by longtime AMV contest organiser Patrick Bohnet/Quu and to a lesser degree, Phade, the creator of the Org. We had met in #fanfic, the IRC channel on irc.nabiki.net (though I am not even sure it was yet nabiki at that time) which was the IRC channel for the Fan Fiction Mailing List or FFML. Quu got me interested in editing because he explained that they were essentially video fanfiction. Which explains both his style--and my own. Even Phade's Material Girl can be thought of as a character sketch of Nabiki.

I went from high school through to teaching high school, from Texas to Georgia to Korea to Japan. From a 333mhz Celeron and 32MBs of RAM to a 3.2 Ghz Ryzen 7 with 32GBs of ram. From Windows 98 to MacOS to Linux. Many hobbies have come and gone, but I'm still editing, though I haven't released anything serious in several years, I have multiple ongoing projects. I had hoped to have finished a reedit/remaster of my first released video, but as with most of my ongoing projects--other things have gotten in the way. Because even now, editing takes many hours over weeks or months to produce anything, and I find myself with less time to just sit and ignore everything else.

I'm not as prolific in participation in the community as I once was either, but I've never actually left. There's very little else I can say the same about over the course of twenty years. So, I guess that's something?

Congrats on still being here after this long |:>
My own 20 year anniversary is less than a month away, and its probably been 10 years since I made an actual new AMV (though I am working on one!), so a lot of what you said resonates with me as well.
Can't say that I'm still as hyped about AMVs as I used to be back in the day, but I'm still hanging on, too.

Thanks! Congrats to you too (somewhat early)

I think I last released a serious, and award wining video in 2013. I did release a couple of not-so-serious videos, and a remaster of Julian Fong's Robot Girl in high definition of which I am quite proud, given the original was 320x240 VHS. But I've got a couple of serious contest entry worthy projects I keep picking at. I expect one in particular to do quite well--if I ever finish it.

They're still in Premiere format on macOS, so I'm editing on my 2015 max specced MacBook Pro 15", BUT my reedit/remaster of my first AMV is being done inside of KDEnLive on my Ryzen 7 Linux Mint machine, which is very similar to Premiere 5/6/6.5 that I still prefer, since I'm a fairly simple editor. Once I've mastered its similarities, I'll be leaving macOS behind. I'm unwilling to jump to the M-series Apple Silicon platform and I hate Big Sur. I fully modified my Linux Mint XFCE workflow to look like and act like macOS, pre-Big Sur.

Ah Jeez... I guess it's a little past 20 years for me as well...

Yeah, that IS something! And while not with AMV's i've been an ANIME fan for 20+ years now. The anniversary was this past mid-January, though I don't remember the exact date. I rented a DBZ movie and I haven't looked back since. So I can relate to having a 20 year anniversary in this general fandom, at around this time no less. So yeah, it IS something b/c I can relate. (and within the fandom nonetheless)
