Oi vey... Some tips on downloading raw anime?

Post by Strange Little Girl » Sun Apr 13, 2003 7:36 pm

I've recently started on my second video and realize now my desperate need for raw anime episodes until I have the time and patience to get and put in a DVD rom.
In particular, I'm looking for a raw copy of 'Hoshi No Koe'. Any advice for this noob? Other than 'get a DVD rom, of course'.

Get a DVD-ROM

There is no use really for RAW downloadable Anime. Seriously =\. There isn't much demand for it and infact it would be more]/i] illegal than fansubbed anime, since it's closer to the original Japanese product, so Japanese people could steal it and not have the "ugly" subs on there.

But anyways. You need to get a DVD-ROM in your computer. They're like $30. You can also read the guide on removing subtitles from video. It's not perfect, nor is it easy. Nor is it recomended!!!!

Oh and there is a little rule about not asking for downloadable anime here >_> <_<.

Ahhh pardon me then. It's nigh impossible for me to get a DVD rom right now, much less install it. But thank you for the advice anyhow.

Another thing klinky didn't mention would be the exorbidant amount of hosting/bandwidth to provide downloadable raw footage. vobs for a typical 25 minute episode usually run a little shy of a gigabyte. Now, multiply that by 26 episodes, you've got 25 gigs of hosting to provide. Not only that, but what if you wanted to host more than just one series? Add that to the total, then start to worry about transfer. It would take forever for 56k users, maybe 3 hours to get one episode using Cable/DSL. Hosting would be a bitch, I honestly have no idea on costs of bandwidth, storage space and the like. Of course, there's always KaZaA or FTP, right? Well, that still will take forever, and is limited on the host's upload speed.

Also, I'm not positive, but I remember hearing somewhere that if you move a vob to another folder, it won't access properly. Given that, I'd imagne transfer would be pointless.

I dunno, someone'll probably come here and bitch slap my post to hell, whatever. At any rate, the best thing to do is save up some money and get a DVD-ROM. I believe you can get a good drive at Best Buy for around $50.

Your best source, however, would be newsgroups, specifically:

alt.binaries.multimedia.anime.raws

That's the best suggestion I can offer you.

I should also mention that ADV is set to release Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) on Region 1 DVD on June 10.

Maybe a DVD Rom would be your best bet.

OOo, now there's a little bit of news I didn't know, the release thing. Yay!
Hopefully by June I'll either have a DVD rom or a totally new computer. Thanks!

Not quite true... a VOB can still be viewable outside of a DVD directory structure, but without the IFO file you will not have chapter stops and the like. Another pain is if an ep goes from one VOB file to another. But if the disc is done correctly, you can use a program like SmartRipper to re-create the IFO and VOB files just for one ep. But not all encoders will play well with 'fresh' IFO files (DVDx, which I use to help split up my files into bite sized HuffyUV chunks, is one of them).

Just out of curiosity, would it really be necessary to transfer a VOB file or two for 'anal-retentive' quality all across the creation process? I would think that a 500MB DivX encode for a 23 minute ep would not lose enough visual information that could be easily picked out by normal viewers. Of course after you get it you encode it into HuffyUV so you don't lose any data during the editing process. :)
