Playing AMVs in public?

Post by Lain is Lain » Mon Apr 14, 2003 5:55 am

I have a question about play AMVs in public.

I made an AMV for a local band. They liked it so much that they want to play it at one of there shows. The show is an all ages venue with a cover charge. Does anyone know if the band would get in trouble for it? Or me for that matter. Does anyone have any legal information that I could look at on this subject?

Yes I understand that the video is all copyrighted material. Why are we all getting away with it? And why are people that enter big contests at large public venues getting away with it?

If anyone has any information on a similar situation please reply to this message.

Thank you for all your help.

Because no one is making money off of them(well most aren't) and it's promiting the music / anime used.

So basically it's free promotion for anime / music. Which to anime sane company out there = A Good Thing.

Also this is looked apon as a Fan Thing. The last thing they should do would be to piss off fans that support their products.

There are SOME out there, who shall remain nameless, who are turning a tiny profit on their AMVs(selling DVDs coff coff). Anyways that = bad.

But to answer your question, I don't think they would get in trouble if they only showed it at one show. If they started featuring it at every show, I think you would start to run into problems if who ever owns the copyright found out.

You could always talk to the company that distributed it and see if you can get a OK from them. I haven't really heard of anyone actually hearing back from them, or even doing this. So I don't know how your outcome would be.

Anyways good luck.

And to others posting, let's not turn this into a "AMVS AREN'T NOT ILLEGAL" "YEZ THEY ARE" "I SELLZ MY AMVS" "YOU IDIOT" type of discussion.

AMVs are illegal but as long as no one is making money off of them, the companies will continue to look away(hopefully ;o)

First, this goes in general amv. Next, I dont think it would be a problem to show it. But I suggest looking for people who help at cons, Quu for example. They can tell you what extents they have to go to show them.

i'm pretty sure u weren't serious about this...but just in case, dling mp3's doesn't require any creativity or work on the part of the downloader and it doesn't serve much of a purpose except to listen to musik that should have been bought from the artist, that's the difference...but just in case u were serious of course
If you're reading this, you've gone too far...PREPARE FOR RETRIBUTION!!
Don't judge an AMV by it's anime.. u nooB ;D

They shouldn't remain nameless! We should all know who they are so we can all go crush them! :P

Thank you all for your suggestions. I also thought that it probably wouldn't matter if we did it just this one time. Neither my self or the band are using this to make money. And I understand that it could not be used as a gimmick for the band. Well with this information I guess i'll leave it to the band manager.

I'll message back if any happens! :?

Thank you again for your help.

-To all my online friends here Thank You-
