What videos to show at the first Finnish AMV presentation?

Post by Lupus_Lupus » Fri Jul 25, 2003 3:16 am

So here is the deal. Our studio Arctic tribe has been given the great privilege to keep the first AMV presentation in Finland on 1-3 of July at Animecon II. It’s a small con but it’s the only anime con that we have around here. We even got permission to show AMVs but showing them is our responsibility. The con doesn’t take responsibility, if there’s going to be trouble with copyrights. We can’t be sure what will happen (probably nothing) because this is the first time anybody has shown AMVs on a public occasion in Finland. Lets hope that we don't get into trouble but we are willing to take the risk.

We have 50-60 minutes of time and a video showing room with a DVD player and a video projector. What we need is basic information concerning AMVs and recommendations of what videos to show. We are going to talk about the history of AMVs, making of AMVs, legal matters and the current situation in the field of AMVs. I couldn’t find any web pages that had general information about AMVs. Are there any (if you leave the a-m-v.org out)?

If we have enough time we'll show some of our own AMVs and some from other people. We will of course ask for permission from the creators and try to get a bigger copy to show at the con. I have thought about this a lot over these past few days and downloaded more videos that are generally con sidered to be good. I think that we pretty much know what videos to show from Arctic Tribe's videos (3 videos). Choosing what other videos to show is much more difficult IMO. I think that at least we should show these videos:
Odorikuruu by aokakesu (Aokakesu Digital)
Engel (Kevin Caldwell) by Kevin Caldwell
Right Now Some-one Is Reading This Title by dokidoki (Doki Doki Productions)

I'm not sure if there is a bigger version of Caldwell's video. Maybe Quu has a bigger version of Engel? If we still have time left we could show these videos:
Sappy Self-Indulgence by Kusoyaro (Kysoyaro Productions)
Euphoria by Koopiskeva (Random Variable Productions)
Always by Trythil

I'm not picking these videos out of personal preference. I would need hours of time to show all the videos that I would like to show. From the various occasions that I've shown videos to people at home Sappy Self-Indulgence has always made a big impact on people. The goal here is to make as many people get into AMVs as possible. Maybe we will get more time next year. Are there other videos that would be good crowd pleasers?

We're going to give out CDs with our studios videos in it after the presentation. Shameless self-promotion. Do people want quantity over quality? Should we have a CD with many videos (in mpeg-1 format) that are bad quality but don’t require any codecs or a fancy computer or fewer videos with better quality and put the necessary codecs with the CD?

We’re also going to print out papers to give out to people at the con with information about AMVs. I know that we’re a bit late in organizing all of this. Now I have even more respect for people that run AMV screenings and competitions. It’s a lot of work and there are so many things that you have to take into consideration. Thanks for reading.

My favorite video, On Your Mark by Ghibli/Miyazak is not on there. Given it's not traditional since he animated it and whatnot. It's easily the most touching AMV (to me).

Other suggestions, would be:

-"Caffeine Encopium" or "Believe" both by Caldwell (I like them both a lot more than Engel) - awesome timing or just err...awesome
-"Shameless Rock Video" by AbsoluteDestiny - shows good FX work as well as a solid concept (being shameless :-P).
-"Memorie's Dance" by Vlad G. Pohnert - An excellent nostalgia video

And hmmm...I could go on forver, but these are "must sees" IMO...as well as the ones you named. I'd like to think in 50 minutes you could show more than 9 videos (since ~4 minutes * 9 videos = 36 minutes). I think you could probably get away with 12.

I can't believe I forgot one of my favorite drama videos.

Fluxmeister's "Endure" video. It's HIGHLY under-rated (everyone gets "Souls of Rage and Sorrow" or "Eternal Damnation) and yet very dramatic. I LOVE IT! I think it's the music (and I know you like Apocalyptica...I think this video got me into them).

I agree and this video would also probably go well with the audience.

These are all great videos too. We also have to take into account to have videos from different categories to show the multitude that you can find in AMVs. We can’t show 12 videos because we also need to talk and share information and we estimated that the talking part would take about 20 minutes. I could go with less talking to see more videos from the big screen but that's just me being selfish.

I’d love to show all of these. From the few videos that I have seen from the DDR projects it looks great. I just watched Mission:Improbable and Animix part 1 yesterday and they were very impressive but as you put it they are quite long. You’ve done a good job with the Animix project and I would show it, if I had more time. What I will do is at least tell a little bit about these multi creator projects in the presentation.

 How did you know that Apocalyptica is one of my favorite bads? Endure is IMO the best of Fluxmeister’s videos. I’ll do that review for it some day Fluxy. I promice.

There are so many great videos and everybody has their own favorites. Keep the suggestions coming people. We shall look into them and decide what to show.

Makes sense. I guess you need to introduce them and so on since people probably arent as familiar. I'd suggest going category/genre wise like one from drama, one from action, one from comedy, one dance/fun, etc. If time permits something that has great timing, great lip-sync, effects, etc. That covers ths spectrum.

Oh, when Trythil pointed me to your journal entry about me, I also decided to peruse a few entries down...saw the concert pics...put 2 and 2 together (and got 5 :-P). Yes, agreed on Endure. I wrote a *very* long review on it, but then again all my reviews are *really* long. Given, it wasn't really necessary since Fluxy is a friend of mine and I could've just as easily talked with him .

Just a suggestion Lupus,

For a Finish audience I would recommend my SHELLSHOCK video set to the band Nigthwish. Seeing as how they are from Finland - it might go well with your audience. You could also consider DARK LEGACY set to Kamelot - I know they are big in Finland right now!!

Yeah, it's a shameless plug, but I'm trying to help here.

I was thinking in the same lines. I don't think that we need to talk about the actual videos so much. They can speak for themselves. We're going to discuss the history of AMVs, making of AMVs, legal matters and the current situation in the field of AMVs.

I'm still trying to get used to the thought that people actually read my journal. I have also chatted with Fluxy and I also write long reviews. I think that it's easier to read them from the opinion page than from AIM or something. But we're getting off topic here...

You know what? You just recommended my all time favorite video DARK LEGACY to me. Because of that video I now own Bastard on DVD and two albums from Kamelot. If it were just up to me, I'd be sure to show one of your videos. I don't know how this always turns to reviews but I've been meaning to write that review to Dark Legacy all over again. I'm not satisfied with it right now.

SHELLSHOCK is also a great video. And Nighwish is quite popular here. I own all of their albums. Keep those suggestions coming people. It's helping.

So many good videos we could show them if we just have enough time...
Hope we can show as much videos as possible... Maybe I could read my text of amv history faster to be able to show maybe even one video more
