I know you probably don't want to hear this idea, but at least one cat made a significant enough appearance in Pokemon that I didn't even have to watch the series to know that it was in there.

In a few episodes of Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (and the opening sequence), there's something that can best be described as a cat-erpillar... a cat with hundreds of legs.

There's always that ep of Outlaw Star (can't remember the number, the title was 'Cats, Girls, and Spaceships') where Jim meets and winds up having a crush on one of the members of the Anten seven, who fights along with her cats (I don't remember how much screentime the cats got, but I remember they definitely did get some)
