Believe it or not Windows Movie Maker 2.0 (what I have...which is free) has many of those effect built into the system. Right click the clip and go to "Video effects" (its right above the fade in fade out buttons) and you can add those stock effects there. I know the video effects selection (in the menu bar) has the old film effect and a few other color tid-bits you can throw in (like black and white etc etc).

Movie maker is more powerfull than people give it credit for. But it is still extremely limited when it comes to layering. You can cheat a lot of neet little effects out of movie maker, but, when you are previewing you AMV with all those wonderfull effects it has a bad habbit of slowing things down immensely.

One of the things I never caught onto untill just recently is that you only have to upload a movie file once. You can have multiple movie files on refrence for the system (though you can only view one at a time). In the menue bar you will see a drop down menu selection that will allow you acess to any footage you've allready imported and broken into clips.

Ohh yeah, on the import screen (after you click Import into Collections) there is a little check box that allows you to turn the auto clipping feature OFF.

You can clip the music and blend it with other music just like the clips (this only works for imported audio files though). That and fading is about all the audo edditing you get though.

Learn to work it! =)
Annoying, obnoxious and opinionated.

What ever happened to Danny's plugins?
Never used 'em myself, but from what he has shown me in his vid they look spectacular.

Excellent suggestion, here's the link to Dannywilson's plugins for WMM2. The zip file has a number of new effects for use. View the readme file included to find out how to install the plugins.
