Personnally I like AMV's with no lyrics. It makes it easier to construct the AMV as you want it, and is much more creative because you are not just following a story laid out in the song.
Instumental music is often more complex as well and it forces you to listen to the music more critically because you can't just get the meaning of the words and put your brain on autopilot.
For that languages other than english or japanese also work. My next video is to a song in Finnish. (I have no idea what the lyrics are but the emotion matches the story I want to tell that is independant of both the lyrics and the anime.)
PS I am not trying to say that this type of vidseo is any better it's just what I like.

I can throw all the "action-packed" scenes I want into a video. That doesn't mean it's <B>good</B>... that just means I threw all the "action-packed" scene I could into a video.
I guess amvs do need plots .. those types of amvs are hard to do ...
