I made my first video
using Windows Movie Maker (the first one), and I don't think it turned out too bad. I definitely want to give my computer an overhaul before trying anything else, though -- just playing with that was enough to have to reboot twice, thrice, or more often while working on it. The only bad part is that I won't be able to make Computer People cringe when I tell them about my system, and that's kinda fun.
(In case anyone's interested, I have a three-year-old HP with Windows ME, an 800 MHz Celeron Processor, and 128 megs of PC-100 SDRAM. Oh, and while it's completely unrelated, my word processor is none other than Microsoft Works. My computer makes geeks cry.)[/url]

with all those overlay effects?! i be shocked if that vid came out of WMM
you know all this talk about free and premier and stuff, i like free stuff too but i like free stuff with guis rather then messes with all that coding and all i just use moviXone or cineral or (anthor linux non linier editor) or zewin stein, cuzz those ones have some more power with overlays then WMM and yet are free and easy to use. yet if i need some real power i boot up video delux 2.0 only about $50 bucks has real time previewing and you can edit (add effects, adjust vol move overlays) AS THE PREVIEW IS PLAYING IN REAL TIME, i'd like to see premier do that!

Been a while.
Damn its been so long I almost forgot about this forum. Been too busy.
Anyway what I said about Premiere not being worth it, I stick too. If you bought it already its not bad. I've just used it enough at my friends not to like it. Its just not worth the price tag.
Its easy as hell. But sometimes its picky about its settings, imports, and a few minor things that piss me off sometimes like fps.
I also tend to use the keyboard more than mouse (its faster if you remember the keys), but that tends to strain ram when you go too fast with multiple large programs. So I do admit it may not crash as much for others. Still 256 ram isn't that bad. I've run tougher programs than Premiere on 256 systems.
I was just offering a way for those with access to WMM only to make cool videos. Plus it has the color space advantage. Once converted the data is gone. There is 'almost' no point in going back to YUY.
Somebody did get me on the layering issue though. AviSynth is a bitch to layer in sometimes, but hey its freeware. (and damn good freeware.) Plus I like some of Premiere's encoding features. (If only RM made an export for Premiere 5.0. Then the plug-in for FlaskMPEG could be used.)
Essentially AviSynth does almost everything Premiere does minus some drawbacks, but minus the GUI too.
GUIs like Premiere are easy, but you pay the price in control sometimes.
Scripting and code based programs have their advantages in control, accessibility, stability, and adaptation. But they take practice on several levels.
I dont remember much of DOS, but I do remember it did what you wanted. It just took forever and was a little bit of a pain. Even the most dedicated old school programmer will sell out for a GUI in some cases.
I just think Premiere is to limited to ask such a high price. When software costs almost as much as PC it should do a lot more than just edit videos. Hell it should give you a high five when you finish the vid.
If you read the Premiere manual you'll find a ton of its features have been deprecated. It will say refer to After Effects.
I had a chance to work with AE a time or two (Yeah I have computer crazed friends). It really puts Premiere's layering and filter effect abilities to complete shame. In fact the only thing it leaves to Premiere is the speed changing and realtime audio use. Though you can do the timing in AE, but you just as soon do it with AviSynth.
AE and Premiere are made to work together so it just seems like two programs were made where it should have been one. Seems like extortion to me when Adobe does actually have competitors in the video department.
Hopefully that clears up any questions I got asked earlier. I think I got'em all.

Back in Black
Damn I did forget one thing.
Elitist bastards are people who think they are gods gift because they have had the time to read a bunch on a topic. Then they take that information and use it for evil by demeaning others. They do this because the they have nothing better to do. Also because they have no self-esteem and a dependency on recognition by others.
Most of them just acquire the knowledge second hand anyway via some condensed summary. They toss around the vernacular to seem important while never acquiring a depth of understanding to accompany the knowledge. The org guide has its focus, but too many stop with just it.
Then you have the little groupie suck ups. These people pop in to agree with popular opinion to compensate for a lack of an individual personality.
Either of these types often has little comprehension of other people or much beyond their limited scope of the reality.
Elitist bastards are NOT necessarily people that buy Premiere.
That should clear that up.
Maverick you commented on Premiere actually costing money. I just think it cost more than its worth.
Besides a lot of people on this site are probably in High School so several hundred dollar software may be a bit extreme for a hobby.
And quit pirating your music. Metallica worked with the San Francisco Orchestra with Michael Kamen for the album S&M not the London Symphony. Now the London Philharmonic did do the sound track for Xenosaga.
