AMV Length

Post by hackerzc » Sun Sep 26, 2004 8:13 pm

A lot of talk has been happening about AMV length lately and I wanted to hear what some people thought was a good maximum length for an AMV.

Right now the vast majority of contests have a limit of 5 to 6 minutes. So what do YOU the creator or viewer think is a good time.

Just say a number, or go into detail if you would like, but I really would like to get as much input on this as I can.

that is a fine durantion for an amv, any longer and it can tend to get boring. Not everyone can pull off a longish amv.

My longest AMV stands at 7:05. While I was happy with that, I think a good average is between 3:00 and 4:30, any shorter and I usally want more, any longer and I'm usally board.
Of course it varies, I like short comedy videos but long, deep, serious videos, providing they can keep my interest, that is.

i think contest limits are for the scope of presenting dozens of amvs in a row. if i'm just watching a few amvs at a time, i can tolerate up to maybe 20-30 minutes. the challenge is for the creator to make something that holds your interest for that long -- it would probably have to be diverse yet consistent.

The Wasteland does that really well, so the seven minutes it spans feels pretty quick.

Wow, That's Long! puts out a decent attempt for a 20-minute vid, but I didn't think it was consistent enough.

The question is "how long do you think an AMV should be"

Picture yourself at a contest, watching AMV's from a category you hate.....
Low long would it take for you to get tired of watching an it and say to yourself "Damn is this thing EVER going to end?".

Please be realistic with your answer. Saying something like "Well I don't like the category so 1 second is too long".... is not acceptable.

Depends on the idea. Some ideas would suck if done longer than a minute or so (IE most of the AMV Hell segments) while others demand a lengthy 6 or 7 minute video. In general comedy, dance, and action vids are good short while drama/serious are good long.

Contest-wise, it's generally fair. As much as I'd like to submit some longer AMV's to cons, I realize that in many cases, that would be in a way unfair to both the audience and the other editors. I'm sure there are exceptions but, if a con doesn't accept my long videos, I don't mind. I don't make long videos (or any videos at present, really) for cons in the first place.

As for length - well, my first AMV was nearing 7 minutes; my 4th AMV went for 7 and a half. Whereas the first was very repetitive musically and somewhat less repetitive visually (though still repetitive - and, I still think it came out just the way I wanted), the latter 4th one was I think varied enough both musically and visually to justify the length.

How long do I want to go?

The 12 minute mark is somewhere I would like to go eventually, because two of my favorite music pieces, and several other noteworthy compositions, are around that length. But that's not something I'll take on anytime soon.

In shorter term, about 8 or 8.5 minutes is something I might try and play with sometime. (in fact, I tried about a month ago and ran out of visuals/editing skills)

I like to keep it about 3 minutes or less.
Though I wanna do a 12 minute one sometime.

Bout 1 minutes till I have noticed it really sucks...
Umm AMV should be in general no longer then 7 minutes I guess IMO but if I hated it, sitting around wasting 7 minutes of my life I would proboly still do <_<
