Meaning vs. Dynamic

Post by Yoakim » Thu Oct 07, 2004 6:10 pm

Im pretty new here so i don't know too much about what is popular around here.
So im wondering what kind of AMV "style" most people like/prefere around here.
The "meaningfull" type where the lyrics fits to anime (even if its just rough cutting), or more of the "dynamic" like stuff where the music fits to the anime (even if the lyrics doesnt fit at all) ?
Of course the mix betwen the both is the best. But lets not think there where any "mix".
What would you prefere ?
I think the "Meaningfull" would point most towards creativety and "Dynamic" more towards editing skills...

I hope im not confusing...

I love both, and try to mix it when I make videos. I first focus on meaningful and try to reenforce it with dynamic. ^_^

If I were to take one over the other... I don't want to go too far into that.

I generally prefer meaningful if I know the anime, but I also like to watch the really fast, pretty stuff from anime that I'm not familiar with. And I love the videos that are seperate from the anime, so I can enjoy it whether I've seen the anime or not.

I think this is too much of a generalization. I mean, lyrics aren't even always involved; and yet this doesn't preclude meaning.

At a basic level, I think it's possible to separate meaning and dynamism. But neither by itself is enough to make a good AMV; or at least a good sophisticated AMV.

Well, in any case, after having worked with a lot of instrumental editing/editors, I can tell you that there's more than just dynamism involved in abscence of lyrics; and we all know that there's more than meaning to a good song-based AMV...

Either can be just as good or just as bad as the other depending on how you play it out. However you can't completely devote time to one and forsake the other so you have to be carefull. I think the later is more dangerous because I think it's more detrimental to a video to realize that none of the lyrics fit the anime at all so the choice just seems bad.

That kind of depends on what kind of music you use, in my opinion.

If you use a Death Metal song with inaudible lyrics you should make it "Dynamic" with many effects and action.

But if you use a more slow and moody song there shouldn't be so many
effects, and you should concentrate more on the lyrics and scene choice.

I personally enjoy Drama videos over pure action, just because i suck at effects and don't want to see vids where other make it look so good :(

If you watch all of my amv's they are more meaningful than dynamic. I try to tell the best story I can in amv. And I think you get more out of it that way. Anyone can throw together a video with special effects and not have anything to deal with the song. Special effects are reinforcements for the video. That's how I look at it.

Style preferrences are as universal and varied as opinions. If it's a good song and I happend to like it, plus the editing is at least decent, then it's a keeper for me. I've seen videos where the song is a turn off but the editing is kick ass, and vice-a-versa. So it's a juggling act for me.

Bottom line, just do what you like.

Depends on my mood.

And if I get the video done, no less.

My preference would be 'dynamic' under your definition.

On a potentially related note, when I listen to new songs, I rarely pay attention to the lyrics, unless I am fully engaged in the song. Usually when I'm listening to music, my attention is elsewhere, so I have only enough attention to use on detecting notes and rhythms, but not lyrics and semantics.

That might be partly why I prefer editing to the music over the lyrics- I'm too lazy to spend attention making sense of the lyrics.

Another reason is that within a song, music is continuous, where as lyrics are discrete and broken up into verses. So the effect of the lyric synch sort of ends when the last word has been heard, where as music synch can continue throughout the measures and phrases.

Even within music synch, there are many elements of music that you can edit to. beats, timbre, motion, and mood to name a few.

I find that listening to the music helps. And by listening i mean really listening. Since music arises emotion out of a person. It's, "What emotions do i get out of this?" Since we use all of the music and cut up the anime.
This has no relevence to the discussion above it
