humans like flashy and shiny things, even if there's no point to it. like fireworks. or tv.
what then, is wrong with liking pointless effects?

quite simply that those of us that put in the real effort get less credit (usually)... as I said "like children".

It's just that basic is actually good. Pathetic isn't the right word. Imagination is actually on a high level.

I think that our very own rating system produced this. A flashy video required a lot of knowledge of the edition and video/photo editing. This usually leads to:

- Better video source material, so your effect can look sharp
- Better audio, because they are more aware of quality from the above
- Better encoding, because they understand video editing better
- A significant increase in time spend on avarege
- Many times an effect will be used to sortof match video or audio, and be considered a decent attempt at synch, after all, they spent so much time on it!

So already, you have a 10 on video quality, a 10 in audio quality, a 8-10 in `effort' and 7-8 in synch. Without even having a good video. A for Effort. True Life in this case. And since that's most of the categories, the person is likely to rate high in `overall' as well.

Whereas something with straight cuts, but where the person thought about the footage, but still isnt a legend yet will score really low, but will probably receive some rather good constructive comments since people will care about the story s/he was telling.
23:19 (snip) I actually agree with everything quadir says.

videos aren't rated on how much effort is put into them. they're rated on how much they appeal to the audience. that's how art works. i can see how it can be frustrating, but that's just the way it is.

You've never seen a good "Effects AMV" if you think they don't take "Real Effort."

I find that special effects only really look cool when done right. Of all the flashy vids I've seen I think I've seen a total of...maybe three that fell into the "ok-excellent" category. Most people who try to use fancy vids don't really know when or how to use them.
For example. I saw one vid that nearly gave me a seizure. The special effects would not stop!! The whole thing was framed by lines that zig-zaged to the music, and were SERIOUSLY distracting. The creator had NO clue how to really work the program he/she was using...in fact, I think he/she was trying to show off what they DID know, but came off as just plain lame.
Another example. I saw a vid in which all special effects were timed excellently with the music, they matched they lyrics or the overall mood the creator was aiming for, and did not try to hit me over the head with flashy lights. This was a vid in which the creator obviously knew what he/she was doing, and did it excellently.
A third example. One of my favorite vids of all time has little-NO special effects. Special effects does NOT equal a good vid. Someone can create a wonderful vid without anything flashy, if they can get the right mood.
