Re: me? cynical? no way
Yes you can. DVD Girl ai.trythil wrote:More modern anime perspectives on anime include:
- Video Girl Ai, where the perfect woman comes out of a TV screen. You can't get more modern than that.
Seriously, try Sakura Diaries. The series focuses on a cousin-on-cousin romance (with a love triangle on top of that).
Princess Nine has enough romance in it that it can count as a romantic series as well as a sport series.
I think Super Gals may have some romance in it, but I haven't seen enough of it to confirm.
There is a nice episode of You're Under Arrest where a reluctant-but-made-for-each-other couple are basically ordered to go on a date.
I haven't seen actually it, but Ai Yori Aoshi would probably count at least in part as a romantic series.

Ai Yori Aoshi is one of my favorite romances. Think Love Hina, but not quite so wacky and more romantic. For Streight romance and a little comedy thrown in just for comic releif, Marmalade boy is also one of my all time favorites. I also realy recomend KoR (Kimagore Orange Road) the TV series. the OVAs are ok, but not as good as the tv series. KoR is lighter than Marmalade boy, if thats to serious/heart wrenching for ya.
SOmeone will probably shoot me for this, but... Fushigi Yuugi was pretty descent aswell. Besides all the break ups and get back togethers that wasn't realy nessisary... (stupid reasons realy) I just didn't like the ending, but that was the case for KareKano aswell. for Karekano, watch the anime, then read the manga to see how it realy ends ;p
THose are my recomendations.

sorry for double post, I should have read first post better so I could be a little more helpfull:
Karekano has these elements, but also with alot of wackyness, and often times angst and other problems in relationship. depends on what you want. Actuall scenes of "lovydovy" mode are limited compared to KoR and MB.
For a more recently made anime, Ai Yori Aoshi fits kinda, but Aoshi doesn't attend school, I think hes actually in colledge, not Highschool, so its not realy in a highschool setting.
To Heart isn't realy romance... its more of a feel good series. Like Somedays Dreamers. Theres elements of romanctic hints... but theres no kissing, or other forms of openly showing their feelings for each other in it.
Definately KOR and Marmalade boy. fits this description like a glove..... Highschool romances.... And it'd be best if the lovers could openly show their feelings toward one another.

You can't, in my humble opinion, call romance anime realistic. It doesn't happen the way it does in the shows. At least, I don't think it does because it is always too perfect. But I've never been in love so I don't really know.
If you want to generalize the first post then what people have been saying thus far is sufficent. Love Hina, Kare Kano, Ai Yori Aoshi, ect. All shows that are not science fiction, or anything like that. Just normal characters the are in a romantic situation.
