when video quality matters.

Post by bum » Thu Jan 20, 2005 10:02 pm

I got a disk full of machinima with a pc magasine yesterday. The videos were split into two main sections. Comedy, and more serios works. I realised that while watching the serios videos I noticed and was more bothered by the lack of video quality. While watching the comedies I barely noticed the quality (which wasnt too great, as is the case with machinima. Most games nowdays look rough in any resolution under 800x600, so compressing them to a size suitable for the net is kinda tough). Is this the same for amv's, anime and other forms of video? I want botherd by the lack of quality in evangelion opus, or redeath. But I saw a low quality (10MB wmv) version of engel once and it wasnt easy to watch. Though mabey that had something to do with me actualy having the original quality version.

I find that if im goig to watch a more serious video, or something that isnt going to make me laugh, quality will matter. If its comedy, or distracting in other ways, unless the quality is very poor, it usually won't bother me to watch it. If you've seen the higher version of a video of any kind though, I think it leaves an impression that if you see this video you will expect higher quality, and so your disappointed if you see it again in a lower quality.

I think video quality isnt so important in comedy vids... but i believe its extremely important for pretty much ANY other type of video. In a pure comedy video, i'm more focused on what the creator was trying to get across to me. In other types of videos, im looking at the editing, which in turn, means i'm focusing on how it looks.

Some of the greatest videos I've seen didn't have the best quality, so I don't bitch about it.

Pretty much...

I've seen some AMVs with not so good quality, but I still liked them.

I've also noticed some stuff on TV getting poorly encoded (macroblocking). I saw a commercial for a new car the other day, and it was horrendous with the quality...

Here's the question, would you rather have good video quality or a quality video?
This has no relevence to the discussion above it

Errr, that has nothing to do with the question. The question is how does video quality affect one's enjoyment of a video in relation to the genre/content.

If it's not Xvid or high quality mpg I won't bother dlding unless the video is made a long time ago. And yeah, the overall feeling of the vid when I watch it depends of the compression a lot.

I actually don't mind moderate video quality in action videos. It can give them a grittiness that can add to the video's personality. However, I stress moderate, not low. Low video quality can take the enjoyment out of almost anything for me.
