I think it's one of those things you either get or you don't. I know what the plot of the video is and the reason for the abundance of effects, but it doesn't have any emotional effect on me. That and I can't stand the song, which for me is a major deal-breaker. Pity, really. It's a good vid.[/understating the obvious]Orwell wrote:...Euphoria, which was rather.... disappointing, considering how much everyone praises it.
Alright, back on topic.
1. Repetition of thematic elements
In short, and as an example: Chorus that goes "This is the end of the world", coupled with footage of stuff blowing up real good, and with the same two psychotic and destructive characters in partial lip-synch. I find that kind of thoughtfulness extremely satisfying.
2. Recurring imagery
Kind of like the above, but more superficial. ie. usage of similar footage for similar lyrics; a particular effect or shot that's always matched to something in the song... Basically, neat stuff that happens more than once.
3. Seeing the source from a different viewpoint
Whether it's as a result of technical wizardry or as a combination of the right song and the right scenes, I love it when a video shows me things I didn't see before. It's almost like watching a new series.
4. Things that amuse me
I am easily amused, I'll admit, but making a lasting impression on my funny bone is a lot harder. So bring on the fanservice and the out-of-context vids and the bizarre juxtapositions and the evil that lurks in the heart of editors.
5. Stylish violence
Hit me, baby.
Finally, a specific question about lyric synch. We all expect it (well, I'm sure there's somebody out there who wants to be different), but what does it take to really impress you? Having the words appear to come straight from the characters' mouth? Or coming away from the video with a general impression of how the lyrics and the visuals worked together to form a story?
