Use of Manga in AMVs

Post by erasable » Fri Sep 30, 2005 7:56 pm

I'm not sure If I asked this already, so I apologize if I'm repeating:

Generally, how acceptable is it to mix manga with anime stills? With general audience? With contests?

I think I've asked this before, but I don't remember it getting any substantial responses.

I still think it's an interesting idea if executed correctly, but I imagine that it's a giant pain in the ass to clean all the stills and whatnot.

The only two music videos I know of that use manga are Gary's Growing Up And Closer and ajewell's [urlhttp://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/member ... hp?v=51715]Until the Day I Die[/url].

I found the latter to be closer to the idea I wanted to explore, but obviously there are plenty of limitations using only stills. I think it's still worth exploring, as executing it well could be something somewhat novel.

Thank you for the input and link. I dl'ed 'growing up'; its piqued my curiousity.
There's a song I really want to put to stills, but it would be awful if I get flamed/ignored/disqualified from contests.

I know 2 videos that use them. I don't think they cleaned them up, I think they used the pictures straight from the manga. I think it can add drama, like the second video (a character profile of Kagura from Inuyasha). They use the manga pictures at the very end and it's very dramatic. But remember these are anime music videos, so they have to have some anime in it. If you're considering putting manga in your video, I say...go for it!

I really don't see why it would be disqualified from contests just because you use anime stills or parts of a manga. It won't necessarily give your video an automatic "in" to a contest, but I seriously doubt it would disqualify it.

I've seen several videos by well-known editors that have used either still frames from anime, or pieces of manga.

Elements by Pwolf is made up entirely of still frames from the Ah! My Goddess movie.

I haven't seen too many videos with actual manga in them, but Zarxrax's Doujin Addiction includes many, many shots of doujinshi covers (which is basically published fan-made manga).

Thanks for the two referrals. I agree that anime must be in there somewhere. :3 the challenge is deciding the balance and what goes where >.<

:D cool. I don't think I've seen Pwolf's elements, yet. It is comforting to know that using manga/stills a) is more acceptable than I thought and b) that it prolly won't automatically disqualify.

Thx. I'm really glad I posted this question. It's giving me a lot of samples/materials to work with.

I've seen a couple attempts at it and they almost always fall flat on their face Most of them end up far to static looking for video, kinda like you were watching a slideshow rather than an AMV. The closest to successful I've seen is this. I don't particular like the video (I'm not a Berserk fan) but he did a good job making sure there was always motion on the screen and and did so in some creative ways. Thank MrPanda for pointing it out to me in his journal.

Personally, I rather like the use of the manga scenes in this video (don't be put off by the WMV format or by the Naruto; it's a good video, really).

Can't really think of any others I've seen that tried it.

I recently saw a video called "Always" by Good Luck Studios that uses Fruits Basket anime and manga. It was awesome.

Unfortunately .org is acting up for me so I can't get the link for you.
