I've heard that x264 gives better quality than XviD (as it should, being an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec). It probably doesn't have the 'largest amount of people willing to watch' though. XviD does seem to be the codec of choice for the majority of encoders.

can't you encode xvid so the divx encoder works with it? Of coarse... it doesn't help when the divx encode is already made, but.

Yes, all you have to do is set the FourCC used to DX50.

I'm pretty sure there's a program that comes with the AMVapp (or at least it used to) that will let you change a video's FourCC after you've already encoded it, so that might come in handy here.
