I use Xvid because, from what I've seen, it's capable of the lowest filesize with the best quality and the largest amount of people willing to watch. WMV9 is actually capable of smaller filesizes with compotent quality due to the fact that it can compress audio more than mp3 before it's noticable.

Plus Xvid is just easy to use.

I've heard that x264 gives better quality than XviD (as it should, being an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec). It probably doesn't have the 'largest amount of people willing to watch' though. XviD does seem to be the codec of choice for the majority of encoders.

And I thought that AMV's would finally come in handy in impressing someone of the opposite gender. So foolish...

No, it works. But only on a select few members of the opposite sex. It's like being a geeky artist - it's bound to impress someone.

can't you encode xvid so the divx encoder works with it? Of coarse... it doesn't help when the divx encode is already made, but.

Yes, all you have to do is set the FourCC used to DX50.

I'm pretty sure there's a program that comes with the AMVapp (or at least it used to) that will let you change a video's FourCC after you've already encoded it, so that might come in handy here.
