I wanted some advice...

Post by overlyused » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:27 pm

I'm in the middle of an amv which has a lot of "flashback" type scenes... And I'm not really sure how I should distinguish them from "regular time" scenes... When you're watching an amv (or anime) what kind of effects make you automatically think "Oh, this is something someone's remembering."

Thanks a lot!
"...What were you guys doing? Sucking tongue or something?"
Psycohol: Hey, how ya feelin'?

Me: I smell biscuits.

I've seen some videos make "flashback" type clips by making them black and white. Seems to get the point across pretty well that it's showing a character's memory.
Final Doom "Amazing things will happen here soon."

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Substance "Everyone knows that it's a dangerous substance."

If you're short on effects, (as I am) you can try a slow white flash fade.

Or,

Take a quiet or still image of the character looking pensieve etc, and fade into your flash. Let the images you have and the music do your talking for you.
Making an amv, is rather like being the director of a Broadway show, where you have a million dancers and each of them only knows one step.

i forget the name of it, but there's an effect that makes the clip look like an old movie, complete with the shuttering lines going down it and shaking it slightly too.

Another way, outside of filters, is through a visual cue. Like zooming in on the charater's eye and bluring into the flash back. Or as I used in the purest love, to have a "flashback" in a picture frame ... just mask to do that.

Oh, I almost forgot ... In Lost Innocence I used a sepia tone overlay for the flash back and the present time footage shows the character's reaction to what she is remebering ... I think that was very effective and it's hard for the viewer not to know that it is indeed a flash back.
