Oh yeah, actually getting the footage. I forgot to mention that. If you're the sort who doesn't plan ahead, having everything at your fingertips and instantly previewable is another major sanity-saver. I'm not sure how well the method I'm using is going to work out in the end, as I completely misinterpreted the 'bait and switch' section of the EADFAG, but I would have given up on my video long ago if I had to make clips every time I thought something would work well.

Hey, I'm a newbie at AMVs. I'm allowed to be sloppy. :o

this is where having at least a rough idea helps... and if you have a rough idea like say youre making an action flick, gather up all the scenes that go along with that idea, then you wont have to go hunting again for them later... infinity squared has the right idea about that... read his post again, it will help

Along with finding more scenes than you need (I usually only use about 20% of the clips and masks I create) is keeping those clips somewhere. I have started archiving clips that I pull for videos (especially the stalled projects) so I will have them at my fingertips the next time I want to use that series for an amv.

It's interesting to see how other editors work. Nice thread!

For me, I usually go on an idea that I have. I look for scenes while editing, and try to keep it consistent. Its very hard to do it this way, so just recently I have been doing the storyboard on paper, not just in my head. Sometimes the best way to find scenes if you don't remember the series too well, is to look up an episode guide, whil searching for a scene and then looking for that scene in the footage before going back into premiere. So you have the time stamps and get a chance to look at the Anime again to see what actually was going on then.

Ah, the almighty Notepad...

It is the third most used program in my computer... either for clip recording (time and description of scene) or for AVISynth scripting :P

Notepad is used mainly for lyrics, and AVS script, for me at least. I use paper and pencil in a notebook for my timelines.

It's good thing that some people already mentioned it, but it's something that I think I should emphasize too. As important as knowing your anime source is to know your music source. At least for me it's important, with the way I collect clips to use in my AMVs.
I usually have very clear idea of what I want when I start to go through the anime in search for clips. Of course I first go for the scenes I know I'm going to need, but while I go through the episode(s) I also look for other usable scenes. Most of the time I can notice them right away, because I'm familiar with the song and where in the song the scene could be used. Sometimes I even go so far that I'm looping the song in the background while going through the animesource. Don't do that too often though or you might get fed up with the song before you get to editing. This is especially useful when you only have concept for a part of the song. When going through the anime and have clear memory of the song parts that needs clips, some ideas might pop out during the clipping. This has happened to me while making Lunar Gravity, which ended up totally different AMV than I first intended. Of course I also still end up collecting a lot of "back-up"-clips, that I know I won't be using in the final AMV.. "just in case".

You're saying this doesn't happen to you often enough?

Hell, with the amount of time I time I spend on a video (editing or not), I know I always end up getting sick of the music to my videos... but somehow I recover my liking for the music when the video is completed :D

I'm talking before editing itself. After I have finetuned the AMVs to death I usually am VERY fed up with the song ;)
