Gundam 0080 AMV idea...

Post by Android raptor » Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:16 pm

I think it would be excellent to do a Gundam 0080 AMV to U2's "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". 0080 is the series that, IMHO, shows the most human aspects of the war, and I think that the song would go very well with it. I'm thinking to start off with some footage from the opening battle, and to have the Alex vs. Zaku battle towards the end. Anyone want to take it on?

Honestly, much as I love 0080, I can't see this working.

The show's action is pretty sporadic, which would make pacing the story out a nightmare...and given, memory serves, the song is talking about revolution, again, that's a strike against is, since Cyclops team aren't exactly revolutionaries (even if Zeon is...or rather, claims to be) they're just commandos doing their job. They know they're not striking some bold blow for freedom, they've just been ordered to take out an enemy weapon.

...which actually leads to the other point. Again, my memory could be hazy here, but the song in question was basically talking about civilians fighting...there's none of that in 0080. It's all straight out EF soldiers/Side 6 defense forces vs Zeon soldiers.

If you think you can make it work, more power to you, but personally, I think there's better Gundam titles that'd match this song than 0080.

Actually, the song isn't about a revolution, just the horrors of war. And I think that no series illustrates that better than 0080. Originally, I was thinking it might work well with some 08th footage thrown in, but I don't think so anymore...

Even for horrors of war, the lyrics still don't fit...a song and a show can have the same concept, that still doesn't make them a good fit for each other (...let's face it...would you try to make Deep Purple's 'The Battle Rages On', another song about the horrors of war, work with 'Grave of the Fireflies' a movie that uses the same concept in a very different way?)

If you want an anime that would better fit this song, I'd say you'd probably have a better shot with 'Now and Then, Here and There'...a majority of the series has the protagonist drafted to serve on the frontlines of a war he doesn't know anything about...while there, he's given a front-row seat to humanity at its worst.)

In this case, the lyrics are pretty distinctly visual as a direct war...but in Al's world, the war is kind of behind the curtain. Sure, people see the fighting, but no one really processes it, so there's not a whole lot of suffering going on...and frankly, most of Al's suffering is pretty useless without taking the breaks to establish his ties to Bernie and the others...and with a song like this, you won't get those openings.
