It's source or nothing.

I only make videos from Anime I enjoy (hense people saying to themselves: "Kino what?").

So for me it's enjoyment or nothing.

:D

Funny story.

For me it's Source > Entertainment.

But if it's for entertainment only, I'll more likely buy the official version. If it's just for source and I don't like the anime, or don't want to buy it(The many reasons you guys use netflix) I buy the bootleg from ebay.

The reason it usually works out this way is because most bootlegs don't have dubs, and their subtitles suck ass. Meanwhile, If I'm so dedicated to making a video from it, I can always filter it to all hell. The only problem now is a lot of new bootlegs have this watermark in the corner, and it's like.
Gragh. What happened ot the good old fashioned bootlegs that were actually decent?

Then sometimes if I buy a bootleg and the bootleg screws up somewhere(I've on more than one occation had a bootleg where a few episodes just wouldn't play), or the quality is worse than the other episodes, I'll go out and buy the official version of that particular episode set. I don't consider it much of a loss since the bootleg of a series costs about as much as one official DVD usually. So having multiple copies of the same thing is kind of worth it. I'll also do that(multiple versions) if I want a creditless opening, or certain extras.

For example, the last Escaflowne DVD has just about every FMV on it from the PS1 game that was never released in the US. In the game, Van and Escaflowne actually show up on Earth, flying over some scyscrapes. So you can see why buying the US version of this DVD would be good. (I bought the entire series officially for that, btw).

I didn't start buying bootlegs until I actually saw some, first. I had believed everyone about "quality rivalling film piss", but when I borrowed some friends' DVDs that were bootlegs, the quality was fine. So that's when I started. You just have to make sure you buy the right 'brand'. I try to only buy bootlegs with screenshots from the DVD in them. X|

I may move over to netflix or rentanime, soon. But the thing with that is, I like having a hard copy forever. So if I weren't buying Bootlegs anymore, I'd just be pirating Netflix. And I kind of like the cover rt and the boxsets and stuff... Even if they're in Chinese. So it's like a lose-lose situation, and it's not like I'm already in debt from college. ;_;

Then, there are shows you just can't get unless it's a bootleg(or an R2) like Gundam X. Gundam X is my favorite Gundam series and it's like... Zomg. Come ot the US already! D:

Also, anyone know where I can buy old DVDs that have since been taken out of print? Some of my official Escaflowne DVDs just don't work any more, and other old DVDs like Gundam Wing disappeared. I was making my list of shit I have on DVD Afficianto and like all the DVDs I am missing are out of print, now. X|

If you're looking for out-of-print DVDs I'd suggest eBay. There's a lot of bootleg stuff on there, but it's the only place I can think of that you're likely to find that sort of thing. I need to hit it up myself one of these days, since I was unable to get Sailor Moon R before it went out of print, grrr.

I just don't make AMVs very quickly so in this area, I have no real regrets. One thing with some MEP footage I'd wanted. For series' that haven't been licensed you kinda' HAVE TO d/l the raws... I mean you don't HAVE TO HAVE TO, but it's not illegal so to just generally blanket statement say 'downloaded footage is wrong' in itself is wrong. I mean, I'm sure like spirit of the beast or whatever, that stupid overated Narutard video is very likeley made from downloaded material. Plus MANY more.

But yeah, I just don't make amvs quickly so by the time I do I have a number of ideas to choose from and at least one is sure to have DVD material available to me. That's just what I do. Find something else to do until you can do it right. There will be others that can keep the general public happy with their amvs in the mean time. No need to be in a rush.

Man you should get one of those demo catolog disks from the studios, like adv or bandai, those are good for footage too.

most of my footage is from actuall dvds. some are from online places like netflix. the load of others are college reznet traders. the only time I can say i've Dled raw footage is when a seriers is going through those transition bumps that hold the next 7 volumes back 2 years or so. but it;s always series I buy anyways. or those increadibly rare ones that'd cost me in the tripple digits just to get a volume.

Except for the first two, which were made with downloaded clips, all my AMVs use footage from DVDs I own. R2 for Ojamajo Doremi, and R1 for everything else.

My source footage comes from anime I own. I have made 2 from anime I downloaded from Kazaa years ago (but I hate doing it this way because it's so much harder to edit and fix up and alot of times there are subtitles)
And I get my 'ideas' mostly from anime I enjoyed watching and want to share what I liked about it with others. ^_^
