Playing Flash Files - Quick Guide

Post by jnsparrow » Tue May 08, 2007 12:39 pm

Just thought I'd throw this out there, since some of my videos are/will be in Flash format (and converting them to any other format completely destroys the quality). They are .flv files. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to upload this type of files since they aren't mentioned in the sticky note above, so the only one I have so far is an indirect link, but let me know, b/c they really are the best format I have for some of my videos (long, annoying story about how my computer ate files and boochsack was my only resource for dl-ing/restoring some of my videos ... not to mention the 10 page Chaucer paper my computer ALSO ate during that horrible weekend ... anyway!)

Here is a link for a free .flv/flash player -

http://applian.com/flvplayer/?src=KeepvidPlay

Also ... if anyone has trouble getting your computer to recognize the file when you download it, you may have to manually type in "name of video.flv" - I know I have to do that or else my computer stores it as "unknown file type" and doesn't play.

Good luck![/b]

MediaPlayer Classic will play flv. VLC player might also though I haven't checked. I haven't seen many people upload flash video but I imagine most people will avoid it even with a guide on how to play it. Some people are having a difficult time as it is adopting new x264/mp4 encodes that a number of videos are migrating towards.

My VLC plays, but you can´t "jump" in the timeline. You have to wait or play faster to get backwards or forward.

.FLV is for badly encoded anything on Youtube and obscure documentaries on google video. It has no place within a community where people are expected to know what Xvid is.

Yes it is! :) Oh, I have ... 2 of my videos I've uploaded are very high quality, one medium, and then 1 flash.

The only reason I have will have 2-3 videos in flash format is b/c my computer ate the files and the only way I had to get them back was to download them from youtube :(

I could make them again, yes, but ... that would be too tedious - I'd rather move on to things that interest me more now :-D

You too are wrong. There is a flash codec that isn´t used (I think so) by boochsack that is (nearly) on the same power step as our friend x264.

It´s called VP6 or VP7.
I don´t know right now, but I´m sure "Wheee it´s me" will apear and tell us how superior flash videos are... I hope not!

Did you miss the part of the original post where Jen said that she lost her videos and Hosatchel was the only place she could get copies of them?
