While the shear ammount of amvs being produced makes it seem like there's nothing good out there, I think there's actually about the same about of really good amvs coming out as there has always been, if not more.
Just a few of the really good videos I've seen lately:
It's tricky to Make a Music Video
Euphoria
Fire
Shameless country video
Whatever that yatta video was that won at Animazement... i still need to download it...
You just made my ego erupt, all the islands of Hawaii are doomed!

Alot of us also are probably waiting for some new series/movies to be brought over to the states (or where ever you live). Me, I'm currently in the dulldrums due to lack of money. Dispite some of the really top notch videos that have been made, I stil enjoy many of the simpler ones. I remember a Ninja Scroll video to "Down with the Sickness" that I still enjoy, and an Xtv vid to Hero which I'll only watch the last minute of. One video I currently host (though my ftp has been down from a good month now) had the most horrid quality, a messed up frame rate (it played rather jerky) and I still like it.

Also some of the older creators will probably rise up this summer with a batch of new amv's due to the con season.

I wouldn't say it's entirely true. I don't necessarily classify myself as spoiled after seeing the old school masters, and I definitely agree with Zarxrax that the balance hasn't gotten all THAT much out of whack. Sure, the newbies are crowding in droves, but think about it. We all had to start SOMEWHERE, right? And I'd wager to say there are more than a few good videos around to counteract it.

Not sure what happened to them, but...

Here's a partial list of videos made from 2002-2003 that I think are astounding and yet (as of now) horribly under-rated (go Super Search them, I'm tired of linking to things that nobody will click on):

Tom the Fish - Everyone You Know
Suberunker Studeosh - The Two Shall Meet
Nappy - The Chibi Things (That Kill)
Ashyukun - Who Let the Fros Out
dwchang - Glory of Love
Sierra Lorna - Moondance
silver_moon - In My Arms Again (what, this is the fourth or fifth time I've plugged it :P )
Slayerwolf - Eva Masters
OmniStrata - Blue Sky Brings Tears

Quick comment on "the veterans":

There was a quote that I read in Kai Stromler's journal re: Euphoria ( I think it was that, anyway) that went something along the lines of "You don't worship your idols; you kill them".

I don't know what he really meant, but I read it as "stop pining after someone else's work; instead, go kick their asses". I like that attitude; I subscribe to it. I think everyone should.

Personally, if i had the bandwith capacity, i would download all the new amvs and watch them and still enjoy the lot of them because i don't really care if they are made by newer members. its a hobby.

Over the past months I've noticed that I have not liked any of the lastest projects that the users have been putting out. They always seem to have something wrong with it. Videos are all in fansub form, you can tell that the music was downloaded, and also all of them are first-timers.

OK, now besides stating the obvious, I'd like to ask a question. Do you think you get spoiled after watching the good ones and completely disregard even the decent ones? Cause honestly I can't sit through AMVs any more. They're either too boring or they use a played out song.

What happened to all the veteran members too? It's been a while since I've seen a decent video by a member from like 2001 and earlier.
I guess you just have not watched my new video :D

I thought that the general majority of videos were getting better, not worse. Or maybe I'm getting better at picking which ones to download. I usually only bother to download videos that either have a long or semi-long description in their video comments section, or are by a creator that I consider good.

But I don't think there's been a shortage of good videos. I've been downloading videos like crazy ever since I was able to locally download videos, and I wasn't disappointed with most of them. Usually I can always find something that I thought could have been done better in the video, though. Thinking about how the videos could have been improved helps me with being critical and picky about my own videos, which in the long run lets me make better videos. But still, I can sit through about 90% of the stuff I download. And I keep maybe 10 or 20%.

And I don't really mind that nothing's been coming out from some of the senior creators. They made their contributations in videos, and they don't have to keep plugging them out forever. As long as the videos are good, it doesn't really matter who makes them. 8)

Too true. Mine as well, link at the bottom =)

As far as new videos in general not being as good as the old ones, I think that's true and false at the same time. The reason for this is that there's that line between newbies who set out to improve (like myself - even I see the difference between my first two AMVs and my third one) and DO improve, and the newbies who just churn out the same stuff over an over again. Although the great creators are still putting out great stuff, sooner or later either the quality of newbies must increase or the quality of AMVs as a whole must go down.

Still, I think as long as nobody runs out of good ideas, the AMV scene will survive and not get mired down in the mediocrity that is LPZ.

I'm not systematic in my selections so i come upon "stuff" and amvs.

usually more "stuff" than amvs, but the "stuff" like Silver_moon has said are getting better.

[stuff = stuff, not crap, shit, or anything else, just stuff. 8) ]
