40% of amvs are the muzicks. 97% of video is the footage. 45% of the videos is that space they take up on the drive. -35% is the opinions of the people who watch them. 1% or uno percento is the creative mind behind the video. ... and don't forget to top it off with 5% filters or whatever else. ...and the 8% sales tax.

If the song doesn't fit then don't acquit. The video is guilty!!

I prefer the reviews that imply that the person didn't even watch the video, instead they just commented on their thoughts of the anime. (copy and paste from animeondvd.com reviews) So really they aren't even their opinions.

--end personal madness--

I think in general the review should really center on the video itself... even if the song is disliked the overall video should be reviewed (they should include a general "just so you know I don't find the song appealing" if they so feel) ...

I will comment on the music, but I don't grade them on it the only part that suffers is the reviewability part cause I really won't watch one that I don't care about the music.

But Fluxy, all amvs are based on sales tax.

Only one that rambled a lot about hating the song, but it was an overall whacko-twerp opinion anyway. ;)

What irks me is that people use the audio score to rate how much they liked the song, when it says right there not to do that. Just a pet peeve. :x

The song is the most important factor to me, and I can see how not liking the song can change your opinion of the video overall... but getting on people's cases for using music you, personally, don't like is just silly.

YES

Man does that get me. I look to find my audio score a one, only to find out that this person "hates anything by the band", yet went out of his way to download said AMV featuring the band.

I agree with most of you guys, song choice is incredibly important to an AMV, as it is pretty much half the equation, and responsible almost entirely for its mood, pacing, emotional impact etc. , and should, to an extent, effect a videos score (though I always try and lean my reviews towards technical, and then just cap with how it effected me emotionally, but that is just me).

Now, what is everyone's opinions on if these ops are purge worthy?
They are in fact, not a sabotage review (most times), which has been the basis for opinion deleting almost exclusively, yet offer absolutely nothing about the AMV.
Again, not talking about a music video reviewer that had a problem with the song, Im talking about somebody that only reviews the song, and doesn't say anything about the video at all, good or bad.

What does everyone think?

Well, on an aesthetic leve, the reviewer's music preference does negligibly affect their view of the AMV itself. A person who hates rap music may believe that choosing rap music for an AMV is wrong.
However, the technical and srtistic aspects are irrelevent to the person's own tastes, and deal more with the actual structure and content of the music compares to the structure and content of the AMV. Timing is quite simple. Technical is quite simple as well. Song choice? Even if you don't like the music, it should be quite obvious if the lyrics, the mood, and the range, etc, of the music mathced the scenes and transitions in the video.

If they don't like the music, of course they're not going to like the choice of music. But they should at least be more objective than they are now.

P.S. I liek to give opinions, but when I see that a video has lots of opinions, I'm less inclined to give it a review, as I make all my reviews long and useful. Is this right? I mean, if they already have fifty they don't need to have any more! Um, maybe?

But that is easier said then done. Because when the video I am viewing is using a song that has been beaten to death, it honestly affects any chance at objective at an objective review. That is the reason that most of the time I will not review/download any AMVs with certain songs.
When ever in doubt about getting a bad review remember these words; Shut up and make it better.

If anyone's gonna rate down the sound just for the song choice, then they should rate down the overall.

I'm not arguing with anyone here, as far as I can tell, but I'll give a rundown on my reviewing according to song. Song choice effects almost everything for me.

Originality: If the song's been beaten to death, an automatic 2 points off. If the song is combined or used in a way that makes the video unique, those two points may be added back in. Either way, song matters.

Capture: nothing to do with song

Audio: I've seen people who only give 10s to vids with songs they liked, regardless of the quality of the songs. I give 10s if I think the audio is absolutely perfect, *and* that the song matches with the anime or is used well to fit the footage. So yes, I take more into account than just the sound of the song, whether or not it fits the anime (lyric sync, or simply action sync) determine that final point.

Sync: Song choice matters here, especially for lyric sync. If there is no lyric sync, and the creator says up front that there was no intended lyric sync (and there *are* lyrics in the song), then 9 is the highest I will give. If the song is not synced entirely, then the sync is not perfect and never can be perfect. If you choose a song in a different language simply to ignore the lyrics, you won't get a 10 out of me. There is one exception to this - if you make it *look* like there is lyric sync. You can have the footage match the sound and feel of the lyrics without having a literal meaning, and that will make up for it.

Lip Sync: Someone singing words that have nothing to do with the character or scene is annoying (unless it's parody). There are some songs that don't 'call' for lip sync, and others that make you expect to see lip sync. Here song choice is important, and it's the deciding factor on that final point between 9 and 10 for me (anything under 10 being judged by technical issues).

Effects: Some songs don't give a mood that goes with flashy effects. If you have a slow romance song, you don't want to see the scenes break apart in between each clips - the song doesn't support it. For this category song choice decides whether a person gets an 8 or above. Anything below 9 being purely technical usage and how well it fits the overall video - but even this is tied back to the song and the 'mood' the song gives.

Effort: If a person chooses a song that has nothing to give to the footage, then obviously there's a problem. Song choice matters here, though the actual number of points taken off depends on what's in the video besides the song. A poorly chosen or badly used song can seriously lower someone's effort unless they have a good reason for picking it (pure action sync vids would count here).

Overall: Song choice. If the song doesn't fit, then there's a lot of improvement possible for the video. I can't say something 'couldn't be better' if the song choice is horrible.

Reviewable: ^_^ Song matters. If I can't stand a song, I may have trouble sitting through a video using that song (depending on whether the footage or mix catches my attention). A 4 is not unheard of, based on song choice alone. But this is rare for me, since I hate very few songs, and I can usually watch a vid using a song I hate just for the concept of the video, and the mix of anime used.

So, the song factors into almost every category. Discussing song choice in a review, if it's broken down like this, can in fact be reasonable. If the review talks mostly about the song and the use of the song in relation to the footage, it's a valid review. Now, if someone says 'i hate this song' and then gives low scores for everything without any explanation, it's a crap review. ^_^
