I do believe that my hosting company's 622,080 Kbps (622.08 Mbps) OC-12 might be a bit faster than my 56Kbps modem...

CArnesen wrote:Here's a good question for most people here... Instead of worring about hosting on a dedicated server, why not focus on building a strong Peer-to-peer network with AMVs?

Example: I use WinMX and share all MP3s and Videos that I download, from both here and other places. People are always downloading from me, plus they are downloading other parts of the same file from other people. This leads to faster downloads and happier people! (because they can get their anime fix faster)

Why not start a standard here on a-m-v.org where we post an indirect link to http://www.winmx.com/ and in the Comments, put WinMX: Creator - Title [a-m-v.org].avi or whatever extention it is so that people know what to search for?

Running a dedicated FTP server can be really bandwidth intensive, but the more people that have dedicated internet connections that share the same files the faster the downloads are and more reliable. FTP servers aren't very reliable and you frequently have to "get lucky" to get connected, where WinMX has queueing available...

Just food for thought!

Its been brought up before. And its been kinda done.

1. Individual Hosting of AMVs
2. a-m-v.org
3. Waldo's FTP is an FTP dedicated to AMVs and the such.
2. a-m-v.org's AIM Chat Room.
3. a-m-v.org's room on DAL net via IRC.
4. And also in the works an AMV Server being designed on an existing P2P Network although it might be a month or so before that gets up full time.
5. Golden Donut Hosting by a-m-v.org this also might take sometime before this becomes availiable not too mention some cash....

Yeah so those are all the options one can get AMVs.

Well the link to it should be on your member page.

And also not too mention you can get good AMVs off of P2P/File Sharing apps and the such.

Those are some of the ones I use with the exception of Morpheus I'm waitin' for the New Version.

-Kazaa
-Morpheus (vs. 2.0)
-WIN MX

I actually tried out doing WinMX sharing just earlier this week. I refuse to share on Kazaa or Morpheus since they both have spyware attached to them, and WinMX actually gets a lot of traffic in both the US and Japan so it fit me pretty well.

Unfortunately, the WinMX P2P network appears to be based upon the many factors which jBone listed, although in addition the alignment of the planets seem to play a major role as well. Some people I messaged could see my videos (Ian) but all the people in the AMV AIM chatroom who were around could not.

So instead I just setup an FTP server. It lets me put direct download links from my webpage, and the only functionailty it lacks vs. WinMX is that you can't have a file queue for people who want to get in line to download. Other than that, it uses up less CPU on my poor little laptop and it more reliable.

Sure people can't search for my videos and get my download site (I've considered running both programs at the same time, but that would take too many cycles) but that's life. Most of the people downloading my videos are following the links off a-m-v.org to my homepage or are normal visitors of my site. So far I've been getting pretty solid traffic ever since yesterday evening when I guess the news finally spread around that my downloads were back up.

It also lets me ban the IPs of people who spam, whereas in WinMX I'd have to keep a watch on my download list to nix people who queue up like 10 videos at once.

Flash FXP allows you to queue FTP transfers...client side though.

Well spyware shouldn't stop you from trying out new software that you might like. =)

If spyware is your only concern then you should try the software thats out there, that gets rid of spyware on your computer.

The following is some software I found while browsing on google.
Pretty Good Reviews for these software. I think a while ago they had a News Special on spyware and they explainin' how it each of these works.

Pest Patrol
AD-Aware

You set-up an FTP thats cool.

I've always wanted to set-up an FTP but never knew exactly what I needed to start. And exactly how I would go about settin' it up.

Hmn....I wonder if there's a guide to settin' up an FTP.....
