Come on, man, you're an anime fan! You should be able to think of better worst-case scenarios than that.

How about, we find aliens, and that results in them finding us. They decide humans are crunchy and delicious, and they invade, quickly taking control of critical infrastructure. Soon 95% of surviving humanity are enslaved in the titanium mines. A small but noble band of lovable misfits survives by hiding in the sewers, making daring raids on the alien encampments. A child is born in the sewers; while still a baby, she is found to have amazing psychic powers.

I don't really think it'd have to be "Good enough" I just think it would have to be really pretty, and made in a way so you really can't tell when it ends or starts... The never ending AMV screensaver. Woo!
