Long or short ops?

When it comes to getting ops, the size really depends on the person giving it, at least for me. With a new reviewer who I didn't specifically ask for a review from, I'm happy with any length. The only time I'd feel upset by the review being short is if the scores are very low with nothing written in the bad section. Even one sentence saying 'the timing was bad, or quality sucks' would do it for me - so long as there's some sort of explanation for a low score (and by 'low' I mean 5 or under). I don't think anyone should give or receive a score beneath a 5 (supposedly average) without some sort of explanation.
With some people I tend to expect longer ops, just because I've gotten used to their reviewing style. For instance if I received a review from Omni that consisted of two sentences per section and nothing else I'd be a little unsatisfied. For some readers off my site I'm happy with a few words in each section since I know few have the time to actually leave reviews. Some of my friends from my website tend to vary a lot depending on the vid - if they like it a lot or dislike it, they'll write more. If they're satisfied but not too impressed, I may get a few words. But since I know them I'm happy.
I guess my point is that unless I know the person, I don't expect any set length for reviews. And i make it a rule to reply to every review I get now. I didn't do it when I first joined, and I've been very bad lately about not rewatching the vid and replying to points people make, but I plan to eventually, really I do. ^_^;;
As far as I'm concerned, the numbers - no matter how bad, show that someone out there took the time to watch and leave me some sort of feedback. It's more personal than the stars since it isn't necessary, and you have to write *something* - and that's enough for me. Sure, I like the long reviews that point out every little mistake since I'm *not* a good critic of my own work (until long after I think it's finished). But I'm just as happy to know someone liked/disliked it and cared enough about the creator's efforts to tell me so. And I know I love to read people's replies to my own reviews, so I try to make sure and reply to any I receive.
For my own given reviews, length varies. My first collection of reviews were probably under 45 on the 'usefulness' since I merely went through the vids I'd kept on my harddrive for the last few years and thanked them for making the vids, adding a few points about what I liked most about them, and asking a few to make more vids for certain characters/stories/anime. After that I learned more about picking things out and the length increased some - still shorter reviews for the vids that are too good for me to pick out the problems. And now I've taken the habit of 'breaking down' my reviews just in case people don't want to read the mixed paragraphs for 'good' and 'bad' - more of a summary than anything. I rarely do the second-by-second breakdown unless it's very bad, or there are specific things I want to point out (good or bad) like timing issues or effects used.

yep, I do.Nappy wrote:hehe, I think ur talking about my review >_> I like long ones, but I also feel I would need to respond sorta long too. Esp. when they quote times, I gotta look up hehe
Also I feel like if I respond to one I should do them all @_@ Even though I would want to just respond to a few good ones. So I tend to respond to every single op I have at one time, and I haven't had time lately. I got like 60 total in the past month, but it looks like the con aftermath is over so I will get to it soon, promise ._.
I don't reply always, depends on the op. If it are only scores with something like "it sucks" or "it was good" then I don't reply. I don't appreciate that.
lets say, I like it more to recieve 1 really long useful op than 10 average useful ones. the details are important, little things which improve / drag down the whole video
they take me 2-3 hours to do. guess that's because of my average english skills ^^'They usually take me like 30 minutes to do ;_;.

I sort of picked up a reviewing style based on some of the more enjoyable and helpful reviews I've recieved. From them I created my own way of writing opinions, which tend to be on the long side. Most of my creator comments consist of people thanking me and stating that I'm being helpful, so I figure my style works. But then again it still depends on the video itself. A vid full of thematic content and symbolism may warrant a review of over 1000 words, but a simple action vid may be more like 500-600. It just depends on how much material you have to work with.
Anyways, I like recieving long ops that are both clear and detailed at the same time. Now, I'm not a big fan of ops that seem overly nitpicky. I don't want a paragraph about why a second doesn't work (*cough thanks beowulf cough cough), it just seems like rambling if it gets TOO detailed. However, I like getting a good sense of where the scores came from, and maybe a few moments that really stuck out to the reviewer as being especially good or bad or out of place or whatever.

Precisely. Long reviews are good if you have a lot to say that you don't think has been said and you think the creator really should hear. I remember my review for Nailz' Eva vid was around 1700 words, but it was that long because that's how much there was to the video. But my review for Euphoria was considerably smaller because Koop had already heard everything I really wanted to say about it.SSJVegita0609 wrote:I sort of picked up a reviewing style based on some of the more enjoyable and helpful reviews I've recieved. I think if you want only short reviews or no reviews, you need to put that in the video profile.

Re: Long or short ops?
First thing: If you care a whole lot about getting a reply, don't write reviews. You're writing them for the wrong reasons. They are for the vid maker, not for you. If you feel overlooked/slighted/etc., you need to step away from the computer for a while, because you're getting way too serious about it. There could be a million reasons why the vid maker doesn't reply. Don't worry about it.JCD wrote:After writing a 1600 words opinion without getting a reply I've asked myself...
Anyway - I like long reviews, most definitely - or, technically, okay, reviews that cover as many points as possible and go into why the reviewer did or didn't like the video, and what they thought about it. And I like reviews equally well from people who didn't care all that much for the videos as long as they go into why, and not just "Eh, it sucked, bye."
It's all about detail.

Since I'm a begginer editor , I like to hear what I hav to do to make better vids , so long opinions are great , but ,I can say that I liked it some short comments more than some long ones ,I mean it's in the eye of the viewer ,if the member that gave me some opinion that explain me about something that I can realy use in my next vids , that one I'll call by a good opinion, so I don't care too much about how many words he/she used to write those comments , I just want to know what was bad/good and if he/she liked it or not my vid.
Hmm yeah that's the way that I always try to write my ops.........I mean I always trying to find a point that can be improved , but of course ,depends in the creators edition skill levels ,cuz hav some vids that I can't find any prob ......so for those vids I just try to be honest telling what I felt when I watch the vid .......that's one my big "probs" , cuz for some members maybe my comments sounds big lies cuz in almost vids I'm saying "I liked it" .......I DO LIKE ALL KIND OF AMVs...........doesn't matter if it's a linkin Ball Z ,or just a poor quality AMV , for me is just if I can hav FUN watching the vid , believe it or not .... I still haven't found a vid that I hated it , that's why I LOV to give my ops , and I enjoy much more write my ops to members that I know very well , cuz I can say on what part in their vids i found some improvement ^_^
Oh about how many words I used to write in my ops........Heh I dunno ...I never count .............depends if I hav time to do it

I KNEW ARIGATOMYNA LOVED MY LONG SEXY.... TEXT ^_^
Her reviews are pretty damn good too. I'm guessing they're between 350-400 avg words now... 0_0
I don't believe in short ops anymore.
If someone gives me an op saying [WOOO HOO BEST VID 1337 3V4R!!] And gives it straight 10s, hey, I'm not gonna stop her/him...
But if it's like 6's and 7's with 1 sentence, I usually pretend the op is nothing more than a scrap of paper with shit on it... I have absolutely no respect for someone who leaves me small bits of info of what they didn't like and then they're too stupid to explain what I can do to fix it... [one of the reasons I love long painfully scathing but detailed helpful reviews...]
[damn good thing I love asking REAL good editors for their ops. some of you people should try it some time. it's not the sign of a noob to ask for help, it's the sign of smart n00b. So I'll probably continue to beg these 1337 people for nice long ops ^_^]
I don't believe in short ops given either. Though sometimes, I wish I could emulate MJ's 1337ness and be on BOTH most useful and most opinionated, but since I'm not as Gawdlike as he, I can't do it...
Any op you recieve from me is written from my beliefs as an editor and my thoughts at hand... I don't lie to people when I op, neither should you. Show what went wrong and BAM, there's a good chance you've saved a n00b from anime music video hell itself...

I prefer long ops also, for obvious reasons. More input and useful criticism in longer ops, although that's not to say that all long ops are good. Some of them comment on the music and anime ("I'm not a big fan of this kind of music, I don't like this anime"), instead of the combination of the two.
In other words, quality > quantity, unless you can combine the two.
