if someone makes a video to a song i like and butchers it, i'll be a bit more grumpy, mainly because the next time i hear that song, i associate it with negative emotions. and i've seen videos to songs i've not liked and ended up loving the video and liking the song more.

song choice does take some significance to the video, but not so much by how much i like the song, but more by how it interacts the video.

I try to set aside my musical tastes when looking at a video. Sure I probably will not enjoy it as much if the song is songthing I just cannot stand but flow, mood, and technical aspect can save this. I really enjoyed a video done a couple eyars back to a Britney Spears song but I cannot stand her music. If I'm opinionating a video I leave my musical tastes out of it. The editor used it because they felt it was appropriate with what they were trying to portray so there's no need to judge a video poorly just because the music is not of the viewer's particular preference.

Granted if I do enjoy a song there is a better chance the video will be enjoyed overall.

Side note, I actually like Linkin Park and Evanesence, but I shudder at most of the videos I see to songs by these bands. There are some good ones though, but it takes alot of filtering through.

On the other hand, an AMV can have somewhat shoddy timing, poor capture quality, and other numerous faults, but if the absolutely correct song is found for the concept, then a lot of errors can be overlooked, right?
ok, i didnt read this whole thread so someone may have mentioned this.

anyway, if an amv uses the wrong song then it cant have "spot-on syncing" because obviosly the song has to be "right" in a certian maner for thier to be any syncing at all. and fansy effects are generaly gona look shit if thier used in the wrong place

Yes that it how most of the Evannescence and Linkin Park videos can be described.. as "an awful lot". :? but you are right about filtering through them, which is tiresome.

I'm not a fan of Michael Jackson's music but this was an extremely good video made to "Give in to Me". (AMV by WilLoW)

Granted, I'm not running out to buy his CDs, but I now associate the song with this video so it is true that a good video can change your mind about a song or make you give an artist a chance.

I think there are exceptions to the music rule though. I've liked action music videos a lot even though I'm not a fan of that musical artist, or even that musical genre. And comedy is another big exception. I dunno, the song still matters a lot, just not as much all the time.

I've always watched for the anime/story first. If I recognize a song and like it, then the 'theme' may seem stronger to me - but it's usually just my imaginatoin. When I like a song *and* the story, then I watch it a lot - and the more I watch it, the better it seems, appropriate.

But I'd never download a video just because I like the song - I'd have to see what it's about first. If the vid description doesn't mention a story or theme to catch my interest, I pass it over. Think it's hard to filter through vids with songs you like? Try doing it based on vid descriptions - that's a lot of LP vids to go through, half of which don't even tell what they're about, as if anime and song combination is all that matters. Regardless, I'm not a big music enthusiast - I'm visual first, audio as a sidenote.

I can say the same thing as MJ, almost.

Put it this way: I make Anime MUSIC Videos. Music is the main drive, music is where the idea originates. I look to do the best I can to relate the effect that music has on me. Anime? At best, I try to match it perfectly, at worst, it comes out tacked-on.

But yea, for me it's about 95% music.
