Location makes a big difference. Some people may live where they have a bad, or at least slightly dodgy connection to the org (I know there are times i get 5kb/s when somewhere else gives me 80), with Bittorrent they can dl from people who are closer on the internet. And having BT on the org will not mean slower speeds if the site is set up as the seed, if there's no one else there's still the org so the same speeds. Having said that the problem is not speed but sheer number of files. There are now some systems for using a tracker on a server to auto seed large numbers of files, but i don't think there are any versions that would be good at handling the vast number of torrents being served from the same machine.

Having said that on special occasions packs of vids torrented would be a good idea, such as for the VCAs.

I have found some of the best and lesser known videos on people's favorite amv lists. It's on their profile page on the main site. Chances are that if other people think highly of them, there might be something there that appeals to you too even if it's not an award winner.

I have never gotten anything below 100-350kbps on the Local downloads. What Internet service do you have, 56k or Broadband? :?

We also need space colonies, a glass surrounding around the world, and a button that gives us anything we want.

But people just say 'oh, we need one of those'.

Likewise. If youv'e never done a free ops thread or at least an open exchange you should try it, you'll find some gems and you'll feel good about helping someone.

Of course, I don't know about you Madbunny, but I seem to like videos more the more depth I go into reviewing them. When I really pick apart a video I gain both rememberance anf appriciation.

Now to get back to those 7 ops I owe...

Listen to this guy! That's an order!
(the digging deeper part.. I'm not saying you should force yourself to write reviews)

This is a common misconception of BitTorrent networks.

BitTorrent does not automatically mean increased bandwidth. If you are the only agent on the network, nothing will happen. If everyone in the network has very little throughput, you may not be able to get better than you would from a central source. Swarms are like that.

I usually get around 500-600 kB/s from the .org. Are you sure it's not your connection or an upstream router?
Happy for all of you xD... Me I ho often to 500 BITs / s .. -> Alias 0,4 kb/s

OLE! And I pay 1€/h .. This is my life. Great.

Lately I've noticed that the local downloads server (nago?) has been slower than usual. I've been getting slower speeds for both connecting to the server and downloading videos. But I'm assuming that it's just a phase and will go back to normal in a little while. (A few weeks ago, the forums themselves were a freakishly slow, but now they seem to be at normal speed again.)

I've always thought that bittorrent was an alternative for people who didn't have the means to host their files directly. Since we already have this awesome local server that pretty much anybody can download from... why downgrade?

Agreed. Actually if you really want to see videos that you normally wouldn't see then reviews, free or otherwise is the way to go.

Any form of quality type description that we come up with is going to be generated from those reviews anyway, such as the star rating, or the number system.

I guess ultimately, it just comes down to "you takes the good with the bad" unless you want to only watch vids from people that you know.

2. Finding the gold among the dross.

The suggestion system (both methods) have not recommended anything worthwhile to me, and some of my favorite AMVs I just discovered by perusing the shameless self promotion threads.

I don't have time to read the message boards everyday (or even every week). Can anyone suggest a way to use the existing features to find some of these hidden gems?

I'm thinking we need a better way of ranking AMVs we watch. We have 3 separate systems: rank, star rating and the "break down" rating. The break down rating is good, but there's got to be a better and easier way of rating AMVs. One that allows "kindred spirits" to find each other.

Just some rambling thoughts while downloading more AMVs. :-)
I know what you mean... that's why started a thread. This way I dont have find gems they come to me.
