Well I think that despite all of the resentment that goes around about overused/popular music that vids made with popular music get more downloads for the most part. Because then the people downloading can have the assurance of liking the music they're going to hear in nothing else and aren't taking such a gamble (when you're on dial up you grow to be more picky than if everything downloaded in 10-15 minutes).

However when it comes to contests there is no downloading involved (unless it's only contests but that's besides the point) so really the anime and song's popularity aren't so highly judged, rather the quality of the AMV itself. (I've gotten 3rd and best overall romance with an AMV I made to an anime none of the judges had seen or heard of and with a rare song, and there are other examples too but I'm just pimpin' myself now ^^)

In a situation like the one described, if I were to judge between movies like that (same source made by equally good creators) I'd probably pick a different AMV entirely because it'd be too hard to judge between them. ^^;; Kidding, really though, in that situation it'd have to do more with which was more appealing to the judges. If one was action and the other drama people may pick one over the other, it's really not that much to do with the musics popularity, in my opinion.

If you want to win forget about music and start contemplating outright bribery. Females also have a couple extra options to get judges votes than men don't which might explain some of the contest results I've seen.

well, I'm male and I've spent all my money on anime recently so both those options are out...

I guess I'll just have to rely on my video & music editing skillz (as my boyish good looks don't cut the wet paper bag I reside in...)

Dancing Vash, Rock Lee vs. Gaara, and the occasional Sasuke sharingan shot = winning video.

Someone should make a video revealing all this with text at the end "You'll vote for this because I had these things playing: *list of fan-loved moments*"

While I can't offer any convention help, I will say that personally, the videos that make the most impact on me are ones with songs I've never or seldom heard before, but fit the amv like a glove. a tight sexy glove.

Examples (ones I recommend downloading as well):

Captain Hampton - One Piece

Pistol Packin' Rally - Gunsmith Cats - I nominate this one for best use of a cowbell in an AMV

Cause I'm a Blonde(old but hi - %^*$ing - larious)
AMVs that I have made:
Berserk - The Fight Must Go On - Drama, Action, Violent, Story
Teenage Cowboy Bebop Turtles(TCBT) - Fun, Trailer, Parody

From my experience, song selection is really only a factor when there are audience based votes in a contest, like audience favourite or something. When I was at AnimeNorth back in May, my video got sighs from the audience because the song has been overused so much. But, I went on to win something at that contest, so the audience's reaction didn't effect the way the judges viewed the video.

If the creature used anything by linkin park they would get your vote automatically

That's absolutely wrong. I'm pretty much harder on videos that contain any anime or song I like.
