Better yet, have the subtitle file seperate and make sure that it can play through DirectVobSub or use a container that allows softsubs (like Matroska or OGM).

Which was why I suggested a seperate subtitles file with DirectVobSub. I may be shooting into the dark with this, but I'd wager that most users that care enough to want selectable subtitles in the video would be the same type that would willingly go install DirectVobSub or softsub-compatible container support if that's what they needed. Providing a link to the Matroska Packs download area wouldn't hurt either. There's only so much of a compromise that the editor can come to.

Don't get me wrong, having the translated lyrics or a transcription of the lyrics in the vid profile work too, but for those that don't want to constantly look away from the video and look at a notepad file or a printed sheet, DirectVobSub or MKV/OGM are about the only reasonable thing the editor can provide them with. Reencoding a whole second version with hardcoded subs may be more convenient for some users, but is it worth the hassle (and the webspace, if you plan on offerring both subbed and raw versions)?
