The star-rating and it's (non-) sense

If your star score is really high at 4 or more, or really low in the 2.5 and less ranges, then the score is pretty consistent in reflecting whether most people liked or disliked your video. People actually think about scoring videos they loved, and videos they hated, so those extreme scores are 'true'. Even if the vid sits on my main page for weeks, I'm going to remember the 5 and 1 star vids and score them accordingly. So you can believe the extreme high and low averages. You don't have to like or agree with them, but they're accurate.
The scores that stay and rot in the 3.5 range may be so old they've accumulated so many "don't remember downloading this = 3" that the real audience opinion is lost. Or they're border vids considered "meh" by all, or liked by half and hated by half. It's this range that is tough to figure out - do you think your vid will appeal to half the viewers and be hated by the other half? Or do you think it's forgettable to the point of being 3 material? There's no way to tell. Believe whichever suits your ego best.
The first handful of stars follows two patterns for me. If it's a yaoi video with a bold warning on it, the first downloaders will probably score it high, with the score going down as more people download it for the song or anime used (without reading the description). If it's a targetted video - to a rare anime, or featuring an unknown song, the first stars will be low as random people pick it up, and then they'll rise as the vid is noticed by those who actually like the sources and concept.

maybe after some time of leeching the number of vids to add stars too is alot.~Kuja~ wrote:I don;t understand why anyone would not give stars. It really annoys me. It takes about 5 seconds to complete, it's right there on the front page and it is a really simple way to let the creator know what you think. I can sort of understand the lack of ops but stars are just so simple.

I don't trust star rating. Except like it was said before the videos that have a very high star rating are normally great video if they have been around for a long time and those that have a low star rating normally suck. But I have seen a lot of excellent videos in the 3 to 4 range and I wondered why they are rated so low.
I always try to rate every video that I watch as soon as I have seen it and give it the rating that I believe it should get. The only time a video sits on my main page waiting for me to leave it an op and then I will give it a star rating but other than that I don't leave videos on there.
Average Star Rating Given By You: 3.24
Your Star Distribution rating count
5 = Two thumbs up 65
4 = Thumbs up 286
3 = Eeeegh 393
2 = Thumbs down 145
1 = Two thumbs down 27

because not every download gets a star... I know sometimes I have download and I will be typing or something and accidentally it will pop up and because I pressed the "spacebar" it will suddenly cancel itself out and I will have to try to download it again, the second download doesnt give a star as you can only star rating it once..~Kuja~ wrote:I don;t understand why anyone would not give stars. or sometimes I download an AMV and it cuts out at a certain point, the download was faulty and not fault of the creator who uploaded it, I will sometimes have to download it AGAIN because i want the full version o.0 the second wont give a star either, but its still recorded as a download.
some people choose "open" instead of "save to disk" and if they want to see it again they have to download it again...
theres lots of reasons for extra downloads not giving stars...

Nether the less, star-ratings are non-sense to me. If your videos (at least in my case have about 100 downloads) it pictures the trend quite well, although, to come back to the top, I can't understand why the average likes an average ecchi video which was made in 4 days better than a successful drama-video with an effort of 6 months. Okay as if I was someone to understand what people think . Thanks for your replies.

i believe the star rankings are pretty accurate. yeah sometimes they are higher in the beggining, but once you get enough downloads, they stay around the same score. give or take a few tenths . at least this has been my experience with the system. i have videos that keep the same score that they had with 100 downloads, when they reach 500 downloads. i usually agree with the scores looking back, even though at the time i made the video i felt the scores should have been higher. im sure not everyone gives out an honest score, but i think most people do.
