Even if it isn't outlined in the rules, it's sort of an unspoken rule not to troll, let alone to smaller conventions. It's one of those things you adhere to out of respect rather than obligation. :?

Yeah, that's a fact... (check out my location :D)

Generally, I see it as a sign that an anime convention isn't as willing to accept entries from far away places or even overseas when they are sticking to snail mail entries only, which is logical since posting away my videos half way around the world when it's really only a gamble to begin with might not always seem worth it, especially if I don't see my video on the big screen...

To me, above all else, what I want my videos to do is to be seen, to be enjoyed... prizes, well, of course they are nice, but they are secondary in my opinion. I think I've felt equally elated sometimes when people submit opinions to my videos as they saw them in the conventions (one time, I haven't even uploaded the video yet and already someone OPed and that was sweet).

Partly why I am going to strive to keep Manifest's AMV competition international as it was this year (even though I had a tonne of whiners saying complaining that the big winners were all from the other side of the world - Vlad, Janzki, RolltheStampede).

Keeping the competition open to everyone in the world is the way to go, I reckon, just to get the best videos in anyway. I know the ethical thing to do is not to troll for prizes but I think that should be left to the discretion of the creator themselves, so I am still aiming for Manifest's AMV competition to not care too much if you've competed somewhere else before.

It depends on the Con. JACON, for example, requires you to be registered for the con in order to enter the contest. So far, they're the only con I've encountered that does. Most other cons, especially the biggies like AWA and Otakon, will take entries from people not attending. I entered and won at AWA 10 Pro, and I wasn't there to accept (never received anything in the mail, though. Ah well, I was in it for the exposure, not the prize).

I had a problem with AWA. They said that they could enter my video for me, but I was not eligable to win without my attendance. Meaning they would watch it, but it doesn't matter...

Eh? Since when was this? I believe I asked a similar question before and they told me they did mail outs...

Even if a con doesn't come right out and say that you must be in attendance to enter, some make it clear they'd rather have entrants on hand, than watching from afar. I remember last year, for Anime Boston, they stated in regards to the awarding of prizes that, if you didn't attend and your AMV won, the award would be mailed out whenever they got around to it - aka, if you can't be bothered to show up, we're not going to go out of our way to give you the reward.

In regards to AB, actually, does anyone here have a feel for what the AMV contest has been like in past years as far as the number of entries submitted for consideration goes? Lots and lots? Erm, practically speaking, I suppose the quality of the entries is more important than the quantity, since four good AMVs out of a pack of 100 horrible ones have an excellent chance of making it to competition.

RolltheStampede wrote: Ya right yopu have got be kidding me. It depends on the convention. If they want entries by mail they will say so. If they didnt care about mail in or ftp entries winning they wouldnt open it to those people. I have come across very few contests that ypu have to be present to enter or even win Whether they be big or small. The only con that comes to mind may be Ushicon and if I read right i dont think it is a contest.. I have enter 10+ contests in the past 3 months and I have been able to attend 2. Just talk to the contest coordinators and they will let you know if it is not in the rules already.
Technically Ushi is a contest with a badly out of date webpage. And we don't require presence, we just strongly encourage it...
