For others, mostly... I don't do much of anything for myself.

If a vid doesn't please me, I can't stay interested long enough to finish it. So I do it for me by default. I've made one vid that was planned for a con audience - Ego Trip - but halfway through I ended up doing things with more importance on my preferences than the audience's. I find editing fun. Even if I'm doing a request vid, I default to doing it the way that is most fun for me.

Editing is a very time consuming hobby, so if I don't enjoy the time spent, I'd rather spend it doing something else. I have a lot of hobbies. Editing barely ranks above making picture galleries for my website - it's not very high on the list. ^_^;

Myself, although there are a couple of videos which I'm sure are more of the audience-pleasing type.

Mostly for myself. I agree that if you are making videos for other people, it becomes work and not a hobby.

I figure if I laugh/cry/scream when I watch something I created, someone else out there will too. (But not neccessarily for the same reasons.)

Mostly, I make them for myself, though there are instances when I do take into account the likelihood that others will enjoy it to the same degree. That's why some projects that are likely to have a better reception are done first, during con season, while my pet projects that are done simply for my own gratification are usually done in the off-season.

I make AMVs for both myself and others. For myself, I do it as something to do and for the fun of creating something that I can look at and say "that's awesome!" I do it for others because I hope other people will watch it and enjoy it. Making the video is fun, but it'd be a waste if only me and my friends watched it. Oh, and that fuzzy feeling you get when someone says they liked your video.

myself, i do it for fun. Its just somthing I happened to pick up and have fun with. However also I do it to piss some people off. The closed minded folk is where I aim with that. AMV's and hip hop do mix, but most people will not use it, and or rate it down just because of the song. But thats just me.

Also it gets me hype everytime i see somthing I made lol.
Oh god, that black dude with the afro is always making those damn trash ass music hip hop amvs...he needs to do something with techno or rock....
.......as if I would do something like that.

Both.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? It seems to me a lot of folks have a black & white view on this subject. I Make AMVs that please both me and the fans/audience.

I have my little projects… and by that, I mean I have some cool songs and anime that I can be totally random with. Editing and playing around with it. These little vids I usually share with friends to get some feedback. Maybe I have a different view on the subject, but the way I see the myself-vid would classify under “I’ve made this, I like it, if other people don’t, fuck them. I’m satisfied”

Making vids that please others, that pander to the fans? Why not? As long as you enjoyed making it and like the end result, is all good. However, if you are going to spend 2597+ hours on a vid JUST to please/pander to an audience and in the end you have kind of “I’d don’t really like it, but as long as the fans/audience are pleased I’m happy” attitude… that would be just a waste of time in my eyes.

/rant IMO, the moment you make a vid for a con, make a banner for it, or pimp it in your sig [or wherever] it is no longer a “myself” vid. /endrant

I’m not going spend 100+ hours on a vid and in the end not show it to other people…I’d at least like other people to see what I’ve spend so much time and effort on and get some feedback, be it negative or positive.

The way I see the question is this: when you start editing the video, and during the editing process, are you aiming mostly to please yourself or to please others? Yeah, 'course you can do both, most people do. But what is the primary target, your satisfaction or other people's satisfaction? I'm sure most of us know, as Scintilla said, that you can pander to the crowd and still pander to yourself. But who are you pandering to first?
