Subs are easy to remove - you can crop them right off in Virtualdub. Since it's so easy to get rid of them, it's considered laziness to leave them in. People flame vids with subs all over them because they're ugly and distracting and so easy to get rid of with just a few minutes extra effort.

There are a lot of sub-filled vids here because there are a lot of lazy editors here. If you're looking for an excuse to leave subs in, you won't find any excuse that fits better than pure laziness.

I have yet to figure out how to use it and i've had it for a lil while. It's not lazyness on my part, it's not knowing. If i have to get rid of subtitles, i have to take each frame image, drop it into Photoshop, and get rid of it there, and that's too hard for something mean't for fun.. > > I try hard to get clips without the subtitles though, so that's why my latest video doesnt' have them. It's because i was lucky enough i had enough footage to use that had no subtitles..

I agree that they are annoying though, and i don't like seeing them in videos (i didn't mind it in a certain Furuba video where all it was there for was to translate the song and let the person watching know how well it matches and stuff..), though sometimes, there's no way to help it...

Not necessarily, some people (like myself) don't have DVD drives on their crappy computers.

"Get a better computer" is the flippant answer.

Shucks, good 16x DVD burners can cost less than $40. Here, have an example.

Even just a DVD player costs half that much.

Until the end of 2004 (3 1/2 years for those counting), I edited AMVs on a Win98 original edition machine, which inherently can't accommodate DVD. So what did I do? I bought a capture card which would work with my system and then could use anything I wanted out of my VHS and DVD library.

And as a veteran of editing from subbed VHS, there's never "no way to help it". Even when I wasn't touching source with Virtual Dub, there was always the option of just finding another cut without subtitles. So the consensus is right: "unintentional" subtitles are always caused by laziness, either procedural in not getting/using proper equipment, or intellectual in not composing the video to make it look like you gave a shit.

Unless they're relevant to the video's message/experience (and aren't distracting, which almost always are unfortunately), take em out.

but, hehe, I won't speak bad of subtitles. I don't mind a few. When they are there for a purpose whether user add like Doki Doki's Right Now or just left in to accentuate the song, I particularly like the second one cuz it's not done enough... but.

Anyway subs that are just left in because of lazyness ARE TERRIBLE!
