Awkward situations as an editor...?

I've never had anyone talk about my videos specifically (unless having people comment on the stolen version on YouTube some jerk uploaded claiming it was his counts) but I have had people start talking about the hobby when I've been there. Some of it has been positive, but some negative as well. Apparently they think AMV creators make loads of money off contests. (I work a minimum wage job, BTW) It's somewhat awkward, but they generally shut up with the negative comments once I casually add that I've made a few.

Awkward? Hell no. Whenever I hear somebody talking about my videos I step up and let them know that in a few years with the proper amount of dedication they too can make video at the same level of skill as me.
I'll even hand out autographed DVDs of my stuff if it helps. Dammit.. why isn't anybody making waves for *my* video talent here?

That's a good way to respond to that.madbunny wrote:Awkward? Hell no. Whenever I hear somebody talking about my videos I step up and let them know that in a few years with the proper amount of dedication they too can make video at the same level of skill as me.

O.o Really? Most i've gotten are couple of DVDs and t-shirts... and a trophy once.AthenAltena wrote: Apparently they think AMV creators make loads of money off contests.
Cons really don't have the money to throw around big prizes (or cash) anyways. I figured most people realized that.

My parents found out I won at AX and told EVERYBODY.
Most of my relatives don't even know what anime or amvs are. I've seen some of my videos being played on my college campus on people's laptops and in the comp labs, but I've always remained silent.

No, but I did get sued once.BasharOfTheAges wrote:So my question to you is this: Ever have someone randomly start talking up one of your creations without knowing it was you that made it? Or maybe they knew you were kinda involved in the hobby and asked if you'd seen this or that and it was actually something you did?

I don't talk to enough people for that to happen to me. Except online. I've had that happen a lot with anime fans, I'll start off talking fanfiction, narrow it down to pairing, and then one of my vids will pop up and I'll get that "you make amvs, too?? I had no idea that was you!" I'm not really known for vids, and I stopped putting credits on my vids, don't send them to conventions (much), so it only happens online with specific anime fans.
My friends have it happen, though. My best friend in college, who now lives on the other side of the country, made a friend at work and started talking anime with her and it turned out she'd been to yaoi-con and seen one of my vids. They had a 'small world' moment and then I got an email out of nowhere and made a new penpal.
A girl I used to talk with online a lot when I first started fanfiction emailed me out of nowhere a few months ago to tell me one of my vids had been shown at her anime club and she recognized the name (it had credits, I guess). She didn't know I'd started making vids, but she thought it was funny and contacted me to share the story. I guess it was another of those 'small world' moments since she was like the first online friend I made and we hadn't talked for at least two years.
Real life people I know, who live in the same state as me, don't watch anime, let alone amvs. I get my mom showing my vids to relatives and horrifying them with the yaoi content from her quiet college graduate daughter. My fan-animated vid is a favorite of hers to show to the elderly members of my family. I prefer not to be in the room when she does that. It's funnier to hear the reactions secondhand. ^_^;

Pretty much anyone who would care has seen my stuff already. So it's never happened and it's not likely to happen.
